Evolving, Not Extinct: Music Reference in the 21st Century

Description: This is a personal narrative about the impact of ever-evolving technology used in libraries, particularly music libraries. Description: This book chapter presents the Charles Lloyd Quartetā€™s performance at the 1967 Tallinn Jazz Festival, which broke the ā€œstagecraftā€ of prior jazz diplomacy with the Soviet Union, and proceeded despite numerous official attempts to derail it, as a case study in the effectiveness of Willis Conoverā€™s approach over the twelve years since his Voice of America program began in 1955.

Schoenberg's Punk Rocker: The Radical Transformations of Dika Newlin

Description: This article focuses on Dika Newlin (1923-2006), an eccentric individual who was a musical prodigy in her early life and deemed a teenaged protĆ©gĆ© of Arnold Schoenberg. Dika took an interest in punk rock later in life, and even joined a punk rock band. The author seeks to understand Dika's transition from protĆ©gĆ© to punk rocker by describing some of her various phases as scholar, pianist, composer, and militant iconoclast. Serge Jaroff and His Don Cossack Choir: Two Rare Scores at the University of North Texas Music Library

Description: This narrative gives details on Serge Jaroff's Don Cossack Choir, which first began in a Turkish concentration camp in 1921. The author highlights the how the choir's music has personally affected her, while also giving details about the history of the choir and how the group went on to tour around the world. This document also gives the information that the University of North Texas Music Library maintains two rare Jaroff scores.
