Discussion of the Validity of a Guest Worker Program in the United States

Discussion of the Validity of a Guest Worker Program in the United States

Date: April 3, 2008
Creator: MacNeil, Melissa S. & Hartman, David W.
Description: This paper offers a discussion on research on the validity of a guest worker program in the United States. Abstract: As border and immigration policy is a contentious political and social issue, it is important to consider a wide range of solutions. Actual people are being affected by these policies, but there has yet to be a viable guest worker program presented by policy makers. This paper addresses the possibility for a successful guest worker program by combining evidence gathered through interviews with former migrant workers with an analysis of immigration law in the United States since 1965, an analysis of guest worker programs in Europe and Canada, and an analysis of the effects of the political and economic situation between the United States and Mexico. The research indicates that successful implementation would require the allowance of remittances, an extensive public education program, and bilateral agreements between the United States and Mexico. Although the author's research addresses the issue of a program specifically linked to Mexico, the results provide the framework for comprehensive immigration reform in the United States.

HIV/AIDS Management and Control in sub-Saharan Africa

HIV/AIDS Management and Control in sub-Saharan Africa

Date: April 15, 2010
Creator: Echun, Akello & Spinks, Todd
Description: This paper discusses research on HIV/AIDS management and control in sub-Saharan Africa. Abstract: HIV/AIDS is an epidemic that has, in the last two decades, evolved into a growing concern. The main issues associated with the epidemic include economical and social development, other health related problems, education, and instability in familial structures as well as state security. It is anticipated that by 2020, almost 60% of adult deaths in Africa will be caused by AIDS (UNAIDS, 2009). This is a clear indication of how policy changes need to be implemented and more funding to be directed toward education, anti-retroviral medication, and secondary treatment. In this paper, the author would like to discuss areas that will help manage and control the HIV/AIDS epidemic in sub-Saharan Africa because failure to do so, will potentially lead to an increase in health-related problems, poverty, a decrease in safety and security, and economic turmoil. The key to solving the issue is through proactive communication, effective education and adequate funding from international organizations such as the United Nations (UN) and various Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and combined policy changes from affected states.

International Policies on Pollution: A Work in Progress

Date: April 15, 2010
Creator: Britt, Kerriann & Staff, Marcia J.
Description: This poster discusses research on international policies on pollution. Abstract: Since childhood, my generation has heard about global warming and the damaging effects of pollution. If we act now, we can slow the effects of global warming. This will take dedication from the entire globe, since it affects every human being on the planet. I decided to study what policies were related to businesses and pollution on a worldwide scale. Analysis of these policies will give me the ability to find the flaws in the system of regulations and determine ways to eliminate the loopholes that companies are using to continue polluting our world.
