Description: This book chapter discusses different media texts targeted at a different audience, magazines written for an audience of teenaged girls, which also work to naturalize male sexuality as aggressive and predatory. The authors study advice columns and articles in these magazines that depict teenaged boys as sexually forceful and emotionally stunted, and that encourage girl readers to expect and enable such behaviors.

“Liberated from Serfdom”: Willis Conover and the Tallinn Jazz Festival of 1967

Description: This book chapter presents the Charles Lloyd Quartet’s performance at the 1967 Tallinn Jazz Festival, which broke the “stagecraft” of prior jazz diplomacy with the Soviet Union, and proceeded despite numerous official attempts to derail it, as a case study in the effectiveness of Willis Conover’s approach over the twelve years since his Voice of America program began in 1955.
