AFLOW-QHA3P: Robust and automated method to compute thermodynamic properties of solids

Description: Article introducing the quasiharmonic approximation three-phonon method to calculate the thermodynamic properties of both nonmetallic and metallic compounds. This study demonstrates that QHA3P is an ideal framework for the high-throughput prediction of finite-temperature material properties, combining the accuracy of QHA with the computational efficiency of SC-QHA.

Alcohol Withdrawal and Brain Injuries: Beyond Classical Mechanisms

Description: This review attempts to provide integrated information at the levels of oxidative signaling mechanisms by which ethanol withdrawal (EW) provokes brain injuries and 17β-estradiol (E2) protects against it. Unmanaged sudden withdrawal from the excessive consumption of alcohol (ethanol) adversely alters neuronal integrity in vulnerable brain regions such as the cerebellum, hippocampus, or cortex.

Algorithmically Optimized Hemispherical Dome as a Secondary Optical Element for the Fresnel Lens Solar Concentrator

Description: This article focuses on a way to maximize the concentration acceptance product (CAP), while using the minimum SOE and receiver geometry at a given f-number and incidence angle (also referred to as the tracking error angle). The laws of polychromatic light refraction along with trigonometry and spherical geometry were utilized to optimize the POE grooves, SOE radius, receiver size, and SOE–receiver spacing.

Altitudinal gradients in Magellanic sub-Antarctic lagoons: the effect of elevation on freshwater macroinvertebrate diversity and distribution

Description: In this article, freshwater macroinvertebrate diversity associated with lakes and ponds along the altitudinal gradient of a Magellanic sub-Antarctic watershed are assessed. A monotonic decline in species richness was observed with increasing elevation, with simpler and more even community composition at higher altitude. This pattern differs from the mid-peak trend found in streams of the same watershed. Functional feeding group structure also diminished with increasing elevation.

Antihydrogen Synthesis Via Magnetobound States of Protonium Within Proton-Positron-Antiproton Plasmas

Description: Article studies the possibility that antihydrogen can be synthesized via three body recombination involving magnetobound protonium through classical trajectory simulation. It has been previously reported that proton antiproton collisions can result in a correlated drift of the particles perpendicular to a magnetic field. While the two particles are in their correlated drift, they are referred to as a magnetobound protonium system. Possible three body recombination resulting in bound state anti… more

Bot-teachers in hybrid massive open online courses (MOOCs): A post-humanist experience

Description: This article explores networked learning technologies and the development of Massive Online Open Courses (MOOCs). The study examines and explains hybrid MOOCs and focuses on the use of bot-teachers within a post-humanist perspective. The research findings reveal that, while the use of bot-teachers is beneficial in terms of facilitating and increasing discourse/interaction, it is ineffective in providing other components of teaching presence. Yet ultimately, learners' positive behaviors indicate… more
