“Liberated from Serfdom”: Willis Conover and the Tallinn Jazz Festival of 1967

Description: This book chapter presents the Charles Lloyd Quartet’s performance at the 1967 Tallinn Jazz Festival, which broke the “stagecraft” of prior jazz diplomacy with the Soviet Union, and proceeded despite numerous official attempts to derail it, as a case study in the effectiveness of Willis Conover’s approach over the twelve years since his Voice of America program began in 1955.

Engineered nonlinear materials using gold nanoantenna array

Description: This article describes the use of a gold nanoantenna array to enhance both the nonlinear refractive index and two-photon absorption (2PA) of the organic dye 4,4'-bis(diphenylamino)stilbene (BDPAS), which is known as a dye with relatively large 2PA.

Magnetic plasma expulsion

Description: The article presents one scheme for what is referred to as magnetic plasma expulsion, which would prevent the plasma from entering a given region. Magnetic plasma expulsion techniques may allow instrumentation access to the interiors of plasmas.
