The practices of the early Christian church in respect to singing are traced during the period directly following that covered by the New Testament and carried forward to around the year 500 A.D. The study aims to learn, insofar as available sources permit, all that we may know today of singing in the earliest days of the New Testament Church. Both Old and New Testaments will be searched for all references to song, and particular attention will be directed to the meaning of St. Paul's reference to "psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs" in an effort to determine the meaning of these three items.
Confederate Military Operations in Texas, 1861-18652016-01-14T20:34:50-06:00https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc798286/

This study examines several of the Confederate military operations in Texas from the years 1861 to 1865, including early defensive moves, the Battle of Galveston and the Battle of Sabine Pass.
The Evolution of Violin Technique from Monteverdi to Paganini2016-01-14T20:34:50-06:00https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc798289/

The purpose of this thesis is to show through the presentation and analysis of authoritative information, and opinions drawn from the information and analysis, the development of violin technique from its basic rudiments as an accompanying instrument to the plane of a brilliant solo instrument, a position it still maintains today. This thesis aims to deal exclusively with the technical evolution of the violin. Many books on the history of the violin have been written, but none have dealt exclusively with the technical evolution of this instrument, and it is hoped that the materials in this thesis will constitute a contribution to this field.
Stravinsky's Use of the Piano in his Orchestral Works2016-01-14T20:34:50-06:00https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc798397/

This study seeks to examine and describe the use of the piano in Stravinsky's Neo-Classical and Russian periods, as well as provide a history on the use of the piano of an orchestral instrument.
Certain Effects of Aesthetic Development upon First-grade Pupils in the Travis School of Mineral Wells, Texas.2016-01-14T20:34:50-06:00https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc798396/

The purpose of this study was to determine whether emphasis on aesthetic development appeared to foster educational growth and desirable behavior development to a greater degree than did participation in a traditional-type program.
Demographic Trends in Texas, 1900 to 19502016-01-14T20:34:50-06:00https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc798375/

The primary purpose of this thesis is a description of some of the major changes which the population of Texas has undergone, particularly in the first half of the twentieth century. Other approaches are possible. For example, it is both possible and important to develop the relationship of population change to social problems. However, it is not the purpose of this thesis to investigate these relationships. It is the purpose here to view the population problem in almost entirely a factual sense, basing observations and interpretations on strictly demographic data.
The Use of Isorhythm in Arnold Schoenberg's Third and Fourth String Quartets2016-01-14T20:34:50-06:00https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc798372/

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the use of isorhythm in two of Arnold Schoenburg's chamber works, the Third and Fourth String Quartets. The study of rhythm in twelve-note music has been generally relegated to a position less prominent than that held by the study of any of the other important aspects of the style. This condition is due probably to the fact that rhythm underwent less change with the advent of the twelve-note school of composition than melody, counterpoint, or harmony experienced. However, Rufer states that "rhythm has a special formal function in Schoenberg's twelve-note music, in addition to its motivic function and to that of creating subdivisions.
The Use of Native Materials in the Ante Bellum Buildings of Harrison County, Texas2016-01-14T20:34:50-06:00https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc798363/

This study is a report of the results of an investigation into the extent to which native materials were used in the antebellum buildings of Harrison County, Texas; the way in which they were used; and the aesthetic implications of their use. Cobalt as a trace inorganic element has long been recognized according to Martin (1945) as a nutritional essential in ruminants in whom cobalt deficiency is a typical anemia. For that reason emphasis has been placed upon studies with ruminants, since it seems logical to use a species for which cobalt is known to be essential.
Evidences of Modern Architectural Design in Public School Buildings of Denton, Texas2016-01-14T20:34:50-06:00https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc798252/

In this study the public-school buildings of Denton are examined for evidences of modern architectural design. The three school buildings built since 1946 and the one under construction are described in detail and evaluated according to the standards given. Representative photostatic reproduction and photographs illustrate the text. In Chapter V a summary of the study is given and conclusions are presented.
A Quantitative and Qualitative Bacterial Analysis of the Sewage Disposal System of Perryton, Texas2016-01-14T20:34:50-06:00https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc798246/

This investigation had for its purpose the determination of first, the inefficiency of the Perryton, Texas, sewage disposal plant proper; and second the potential effectiveness of a lagoon now used to complete the sewage purification; and consequently, offset an apparent health hazard. The ability of these organisms to produce by-products in lakes and streams, which renders the water unpalatable, is of considerable public health importance. It is desirable that the waterworks industry has as much information as possible concerning the factors that contribute to the growth of these organisms. Since it appears that the aquatic actinomycetes may be isolated from most fresh-water sources, the problem of diversified environments and nutritional requirements offers an excellent field of investigation. The fresh-waters of the world contain variable quantities of electrolytes that may determine in part the biological activity of these organisms. The unsolved questions in this instance are concerned with the electrolytes present and their quantitative effects on the growth and development of these forms.
Predicting Success in Home Economics with the Differential Aptitude Test2015-08-15T22:32:30-05:00https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc699581/

"It is the purpose of this present study to investigate further the aptitude areas into which Home Economics courses may be classified, and to determine whether a relationship exists between these areas and the areas of the Differential Aptitude Test."--1.
Recent Interpretations of Iago2015-08-15T22:32:30-05:00https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc699583/

A study of the character of Iago from Shakespeare's Othello. Around him men were declaring that scientific inventions, political organizations, and religious reforms were ushering in a new era; but Hawthorne viewed the new society as a probable continuation of old evils and a manufacturer of new ones. His fiction has been called "an elaborate study of the centrifugal, . . . a dramatization of all those social and psychological forces that lead to disunion, fragmentation, dispersion, incoherence. Critics generally comment on Hawthorne's obsession with guilt. His pessimistic analysis of the mind, his somber outlook on living, and his personal tendency to solitude are frequently credited to his Puritan ancestry; yet as Arvin points out, "He had no more Puritan blood than Emerson and hundreds of other New Englanders of his time: and who will say that they were obsessed with the spectral presence of guilty. One must go beyond Calvinist theology to comprehend the source of guilt that hovers over the pages of his fiction. His religious, moral, educational, and economic background was so typical of his time and locality that one can hardly believe that the nature of his writing or thinking could have been determined by these factors. Indeed, his imperviousness to contemporary influences causes one to look intensely at his personal life in searching for the explanation of the Hawthorne enigma. An important influence on his writing was his prolonged association with women. From his life in a feminine world and his reaction to that world, he devised the major part of his style, themes, and feminine character types. A review of the facts of his biography will establish the nature of the influence that dominated him as a man and as a writer. And an analysis of his fiction will indicate the extent of that influence on his writing. Although this study will necessarily begin with a review of his life, this thesis is not another biography; for Hawthorne already has a large number of biographers. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the literary influence of his mother, sisters, wife, daughters, and women acquaintances, with particular emphasis on their relation to his themes, style, and character types.
The Analytical System of Hindemith and Schenker as Applied to Two Works of Arnold Schoenberg2015-08-15T22:32:30-05:00https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc699596/

This thesis uses two different musical analytical systems, one of Heinrich Schenker and one of Paul Hindemith, to analyze tonality within "Die Gurre Lieder" and "Fourth String Quartet" by Arnold Schoenberg.
A Survey of Programs for Developing Store Managers for Retail Shoe Chain Organizations2015-08-15T22:32:30-05:00https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc699598/

The purpose of the study was to determine the practices of a selected number of chain shoe store organizations in training management personnel for their retail shoe outlets. The melody and text have been of primary concern. The effects of the social and economic background of the times and the actual dramatic setting of the songs are given careful attention. It is not the purpose of this work to study the harmonic style of Purcell. This is admittedly a most intriguing and attractive subject. However, as the principal accompaniment is the continuo and the implied harmonies of his figured bass are not always clear the harmonic style will not be treated as an element of the solos. It is fully worthy of individual treatment which would be free to draw upon the vast instrumental examples of his work in a comprehensive study of his style. A complete survey of the songs is included in Appendix D for reference and for the information of the reader. It is hoped that the reader will be encouraged to pursue a closer study of these songs, and to consider their possible use today.
The History of the Brazos Electric Power Co-operative2015-08-15T22:32:30-05:00https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc699629/

A history of the establishment of the Rural Electrification Administration and the Brazos Electric Power Cooperative.
A Conceptual Validation Study of the Rorschach Indicators of Creativity2015-08-15T22:32:30-05:00https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc699632/

The major theoretical position of this study was that the cognitive functioning of the creative individual, as compared with the non-creative normal, is characterized by the greater availability of mature operations as these operations are defined by the Rorschach. It was assumed that the "creative individual" is free to use his imaginal processes to enrich his perception of the world. This study recognized that the perception of good Gestalten of the world is a function of the perceiver, his needs, defense mechanisms, integration, and the characteristics of the stimulus-field. When the stimulus is ambiguous, as it is in the Rorschach, the perceiver has to draw on his own resources more heavily than if the stimulus was structured.
The Faithful Wife Motif in Elizabethan Drama2015-08-15T22:32:30-05:00https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc699635/

The major purpose of this thesis is to present a discussion of the motif of the faithful wife as it appears in the domestic drama of the Elizabethan Age; in addition, an account of the literary history of the theme will be given, in order that the use made of the story in Elizabethan drama may be correctly evaluated.
