Ocular Hypotensive Effect of the α2-Adrenergic Agonist, Lofexidine

Description: A selective a2-adrenergic agonist, lofexidine, significantly reduced intraocular pressure (lOP) in intact ocular normotensive NZW rabbits, producing a differential dose-dependent decrease in IOP in'the ipsilateral and contralateral eye. Contralateral IOP reduction was most observable at low doses. Unilateral superior cervical ganglionectomy and extraocular muscle excision studies were undertaken to elucidate the factors influencing differential IOP reduction by lofexidine. Similar significant c… more

Play Therapy with Low Achievers in Reading

Description: Play therapy in a school setting was studied to determine its therapeutic effectiveness on students' reading achievement, self-concept, and locus of control. The sample consisted of 24 students in two first grade classes who had been retained because of low achievement in reading. Instruments used in the study were the Gates MacGinite Reading Test, the Piers-Harris Children's Self-Concept Scale, and the Intellectual Achievement Responsibility Questionnaire. Analysis of covariance, used to test … more

The Prediction of Homophobic Attitudes among College Students

Description: A review of the literature on homophobia indicates that negative attitudes toward homosexuals and homosexuality have been empirically related to numerous socio-demographic and attitudinal variables. Research to this date has focused on the relationship between individual variables and homophobia rather than examining multiple variables simultaneously. The purpose of the present investigation was to identify the factors which are predictive of homophobia. One hundred and ninety-four female and 1… more

Properties of R-Modules

Description: This thesis investigates some of the properties of R-modules. The material is presented in three chapters. Definitions and theorems which are assumed are stated in Chapter I. Proofs of these theorems may be found in Zariski and Samuel, Commutative Algebra, Vol. I, 1958. It is assumed that the reader is familiar with the basic properties of commutative rings and ideals in rings. Properties of R-modules are developed in Chapter II. The most important results presented in this chapter include exis… more

Psychoneurological Responses Associated with Chemicals in Serum of Environmentally Ill Patients

Description: The purpose of the present study was to determine the degree of relationship between neurotoxic chemicals in the blood of chemically sensitive patients and psychoneurological functioning. Blood samples were drawn from 30 patients being treated for environmental illness. All patients were administered a standardized intermediate psychoneurological examination. Results indicate a significant positive relationship between psychoneurological (cognitive neurobehavioral) functioning and the number of… more

A Quasi-Experimental Study of Inter-rater Reliability When Awarding Exceptional Quality Points on the Texas Teacher Appraisal Instrument

Description: This study investigates the inter-rater reliability of appraisers who award exceptional quality points on the Texas Teacher Appraisal Instrument. Inter-rater reliability was measured when appraisers scored exceptional quality points after viewing a videotaped lesson. Comparisons were made between appraisers when grouped according to elementary or secondary certification, sex, years of administrative experience, and type of training. A total of 707 subjects from 56 school districts participated … more

The Reduction of Tension Headache Using EMG Biofeedback and Locus of Control as Predictors

Description: This study investigates the status of biofeedback treatment and locus of control (LOC) affiliation on the reduction of tension headache. Three LOC groups designated as internals, powerful-other externals and chance externals (using Wallston and Wallston's, 1978, Multidimensional Health Locus of Control Scale) were administered an eight week electromyogram (EMG) frontalis muscle biofeedback training program using an Autogen 1700 biofeedback unit. Subjects were 12 female and four male undergradua… more

The Relationship of Collegiate Television News Curricula With the Employment Marketability of Television News Graduates

Description: This study examined the relationship the television news sequence at four-year colleges and universities has with the employment marketability of those students who major in television news. Both vocational and academic approaches were examined. Three factors were taken into consideration: if the completion of any television news curriculum aids in the television news graduate's employment marketability, if the television news curriculum has merit when weighed against work experience without co… more

The Relationship of Receiving Violence and Perceptions of Self and Partner

Description: The purpose of the present study was to determine whether there are any differences between college students 1) who have received violence 2) who have received threats of physical violence, and 3) who have not received threats or physical violence from their partners. The study examined ways in which these three groups describe their own and their partners' self-esteem and personality. Significant findings indicate that perceptions of one's self esteem and partner's self esteem are affected by … more

Studies of Nitrogen-containing Compounds Having Pyrethroid-like Bioactivity

Description: During recent years most of the successful developments in pyrethroids have been primarily concerned with structural or compositional variations. As a part of our continuing interest in pyrethroid insecticides, nitrogen-containing compounds having pyrethroid-like structures were synthesized. Seven prolinate compounds, N-(substituted)-phenyl-prolinates and N-carbobenzoxy-prolinates were coupled with known pyrethroid alcohols. These structural variations which "locked in" a specific conformation … more

Studies of the Interaction of LCAT with Lipoprotein Substrates in HDL Deficient Plasma Systems

Description: Enzymatic and lipid transfer reactions involved in reverse cholesterol transport were studied in HDL deficient plasma systems. Fasting plasma samples were obtained from control and cholesterol fed guinea pigs as well as from a fish eye disease patient and were used to localize the enzyme LCAT among plasma lipoproteins (VLDL, LDL, and HDL). In both guinea pig and fish eye disease patient plasma, the LCAT activity was found in association with the HDL type particles. Cholesterol feeding in guinea… more

Studies of the Mechanism of the Catalytic Subunit of cAMP Dependent Protein Kinase

Description: The kinetic mechanism of the cAMP-dependent protein kinase has been determined to be random in the direction of MgADP phosphorylation by using initial velocity studies in the absence and presence of the product, phospho-Serpeptide (Leu-Arg-Arg-Ala-Ser[P]-Leu-Gly) , and dead-end inhibitors. In contrast to the kinetic parameters obtained in the direction of Serpeptide phosphorylation, the only kinetic parameters affected by Mg^2+ are the dissociation constants for E:phospho-Serpeptide and E:MgADP… more
