A Chemical Analysis of the Soils of Denton County, Texas

Description: The purpose of this study was to analyze the different soils in Denton, Texas. For the purpose of this study, the soils of Denton County are divided into three general groups with respect to origin: 1)those formed in place by the weathering of consolidated rocks, 2) those formed from the weathering of unconsolidated rocks, and 3) alluvial soils. A chemical analysis of representative samples of Bell Clay, Kirvin fine sandy loam, and San Saba clay has been made, and shown to have a strict correla… more

A Quantitative Chemical Examination of Surface Well Water from the Three Principal Geological Divisions of Denton County

Description: A sample of the surface-well water was taken from an area of the predominating soil of each of the three geological regions of Denton County, Texas, and a chemical analysis of each sample was made. This thesis deals with the area from which the samples were taken, the methods of analysis used, and the results of the analysis.

Application of Concentration, Adsorption and pH in the Precipitation of the Metal Ions of Groups II and III

Description: In this thesis, the process involved in the precipitations and separations of the metal of Group II and Group III studied. Suggestions have also been offered whereby students can make an analysis without loosing metals in the initial precepitation.

An Experimental Study of the Electrodeposition of Lead

Description: This thesis aimed to study some of the general principles underlying electrodeposition together with experimental facts regarding the effects of changing constituents of the plating solutions, variations in hydrogen-ion concentrations, and variation in current density used in the electrodeposition of lead.

Quantitative Chemical Analysis of the Soils of Erath County, Texas

Description: A chemical analysis of representative samples of Windthorst sand, Denton sand, and Denton clay has been made, and this analysis shows that their composition has a strict correlation with respect to their geological origins. The analyses of the different soils have shown the Windthorst sand to be highly deficient in all of the essential elements, whereas the Denton sand is deficient in only one; namely, phosphorus. The analysis of the Denton clay showed it to be highly fertile. From the conside… more

A Comparative Study of Errors in Chemistry and English Found in Examination Papers of Freshman Chemistry

Description: This study attempts to discover what types of errors are commonly made by students in freshman chemistry classes. It considers the errors resulting from the students' lack of knowledge of the subject taught, and errors attributed to their failure to use correct English in their expression of ideas.

Determination of Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium in Various Plants

Description: This study attempted to form some conception, through the analysis of a representative group of plants in the vicinity of Denton, of the amount of the three essential elements in the leaves as compared with the amount in the woody portions. The comparison of leaf with stem as to the quantity of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium is explained.

Molecular Dimensions

Description: This study attempts to calculate the areas of the cross section and diameter of the CH3 group, COOH group, the length of the carbon chain, and the longtiudinal distance between carbon atoms for each of the three acids. It also attempts to develop a method of measuring the effective diameter of molecules of gases. Equations for these terms as given by MacDougall and experiments were performed and the data applied to the equation.

A Physical and Chemical Investigation of Eagle Mountain Lake with Reference to Biological Productivity

Description: The purpose of this investigation is to attempt by correlation of chemical-physical factors to ascertain if any one of the necessary features might act as a factor limiting growth and reproduction of either plants or animals. The body of water used in this investigation is Eagle Mountain Lake, a reservoirs approximately five years of age.

A Quantitative Study of the Common Metals Found in the Oak and the Pine

Description: The purpose of this study is to determine the amounts of the element sulfur, phosphorus, sodium, potassium, silicon, iron, aluminium, calcium, magnessium, and manganess found in the roots, hearts, sap, leaves, and bark of two plants, the short leaf pine and the blackjack oak.

The Rate of Natural Fermentation of Various Solutions with Regard to Temperature

Description: The purpose of this study is to investigate the rate of natural fermentation of solutions at different temperatures. Whatever microorganisms that chanced to be present in the air and that chanced to fall into the inoculating medium are the ones which brought about fermentation when transferred to the fermentable solution.

Mercury-Sensitized Photochemical Action on a Mixture of Isobutane and Isobutene

Description: This study investigated mercury-sensitized photochemical action on a mixture of isobutane and isobutene. Flow runs of isobutane-isobutene 3.2.1 mercury-saturated gases illuminated with unfiltered radiation of mercury vapor lamp gave no detectable change to hydrocarbons heavier than C4 at reaction tempratures of 27C. and 99C.

A Comparative Quantitative Study of the Common Elements Found in the Post Oak and Willow

Description: This thesis explores the chemical contents of post oak and willow trees. Samples of each tree are compared to determine the amount of sulfur, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, silicon, iron, aluminum, calcium, magnesium, and manganese in them. Results indicated usefulness of each tree to humans.
