Expanding the Violin's Possibilities in Chinese Music: A Case Study of Transcription and Performance Issues Related to Pipa Music Played on the Violin

Description: In recent years, a large part of the erhu's repertoire has been arranged for performance on the violin and vice versa. Given the difficulties involved in transcribing the music of plucked or woodwind instruments for the violin, the erhu has been the most popular choice for transcribing Chinese music for the violin. However, the erhu and violin are radically dissimilar instruments based on different principles. Pipa music is an essential part of traditional Chinese music from as early as 202 BCE… more

Influence of Hypoxia on Acute Lead Toxicity and Calcium Homeostasis in Early Life Stage Zebrafish (Danio rerio)

Description: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Pb and hypoxia co-exposure on Pb toxicity and Ca homeostasis in early life stage (ELS) zebrafish (Danio rerio). Previous evidence indicates that exposure of ELS zebrafish to hypoxia (~20% air saturation) reduces Ca uptake, likely through down-regulation of the apical epithelial Ca channel (ECaC). Considering that Pb and Ca are known antagonists and compete for uptake pathways, it was hypothesized that co-exposure of Pb with hypoxia wou… more

Fabrication of the Novel Asymmetric Polymeric Materials via Bottom-Up Approach

Description: Asymmetric polymeric materials can be formed by either top-down or bottom-up methods. Bottom-up methods involve assembling the atoms and molecules to form small nanostructures by carefully controlled synthesis, which results in a reduction of some of the top-down limitations. In this dissertation, thermal, tribological and antireflective properties of polymeric materials have been enhanced by introducing structural asymmetry. The overall performance of commercial polymeric coatings, e.g. epoxy … more

Constructing Taiwan: Taiwanese Literature and National Identity

Description: In this work, I trace and reconstruct Taiwan's nation-formation as it is reflected in literary texts produced primarily during the country's two periods of colonial rule, Japanese (1895-1945) and Kuomintang or Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) (1945-1987). One of my central arguments is that the idea of a Taiwanese nation has historically emerged from the interstices of several official and formal nationalisms: Japanese, Chinese, and later Taiwanese. In the following chapters, I argue that the co… more

Study of lead sorption on magnetite at high temperatures.

Description: Lead's uptake on magnetite has been quantitatively evaluated in the present study at a temperature of 200°C and pH of 8.5 with lead concentrations ranging from 5 ppm to175 ppm by equilibrium adsorption isotherms. The pH independent sorption behavior suggested lead sorption due to pH independent permanent charge through weak electrostatic, non-specific attraction where cations are sorbed on the cation exchange sites. The permanent negative charge could be a consequence of lead substitution which… more

The Challenges of China's Economic Reform: State Enterprise Reform and Financial Liberalization

I also discuss the evolution of the financial system and come up with some strategies of financial liberalization in China. Result from this study suggests that if the necessary reforms of the fin… more

Multiomics Data Integration and Multiplex Graph Neural Network Approaches

Description: With increasing data and technology, multiple types of data from the same set of nodes have been generated. Since each data modality contains a unique aspect of the underlying mechanisms, multiple datatypes are integrated. In addition to multiple datatypes, networks are important to store information representing associations between entities such as genes of a protein-protein interaction network and authors of a citation network. Recently, some advanced approaches to graph-structured data leve… more
