Mark Twain's Representation of the American West

Mark Twain's Representation of the American West

Date: August 1953
Creator: Bass, Jeanne H.
Description: The purpose of this paper is to picture the West as Mark Twain saw it. Many books have been written which describe Twain's Western years, but few have given much consideration to the accuracy of his account of the West in the 1860's. This paper attempts to portray Twain not only as a social and political satirist, but also as a possible historical satirist.

A Measurement of the Popularity of the Extra-Curricular Activities in Cleburne High School, Cleburne, Texas, with the Relationships of Certain Factors to that Popularity

Date: 1950
Creator: Watson, Katie Maxine
Description: The purposes of this study are: (1) to determine the popularity of extra-curricular organizations existing in the school as a means of indicating the successful and the unsuccessful groups in the school, (2) to establish the relationships of certain factors to the popularity of the activities so that efforts may be made to improve less successful activities, (3) to discover the extent and the popularity of social activities provided by the city of Cleburne, Texas, for the high school students in order that administrators of the school may have more insight into the extent of the need of high school students for social activities sponsored by the school.

Measures of Local Fiscal Ability to Supoort Public Schools

Measures of Local Fiscal Ability to Supoort Public Schools

Date: January 1959
Creator: Wetherington, Allen Burton
Description: The primary purposes of this study are fourfold, namely: (1) to summarize the writings of specialists in school finance and public finance which are judged to have significance concerning the nature, source, control, and measurement of local fiscal ability; (2) to develop an analytical evaluation of the "bases" of the proposed measures; (3) to develop a criterion of the relative taxpaying ability of Arkansas counties in terms of the actual valuation of real property; and (4) to determine the significance of the association among the three measures and the relative significance of the degree of relationship of each measure to the criterion.

Mechanization of Aircraft Performance

Mechanization of Aircraft Performance

Date: 1956
Creator: Cotten, Frances Patterson
Description: The purpose of this paper is to describe the mechanization of the basic equations of motion for the performance and maneuver characteristics of an airplane with some simplifications which render solutions more practicable. The results of a study made to program these equations for calculation by the IBM MODEL 650 digital computer are presented as well as the steps to be taken in using this method of calculation.

Medicine in Tudor and Stuart England: a Study in Social History

Medicine in Tudor and Stuart England: a Study in Social History

Date: August 1954
Creator: Reinmiller, Elinor C.
Description: Prior to the sixteenth century very little progress had been made in the science of medicine since the Galenic age in Greece. The advent of the Renaissance with its revival of learning produced far-reaching changes in all branches of knowledge. In medicine and science the impact of the new forces was particularly significant. This thesis shows the development of medicine during this time period.

The Melodic Use of the Augmented Second in the Eighteenth Century

The Melodic Use of the Augmented Second in the Eighteenth Century

Date: January 1952
Creator: Shipp, Clifford M. (Clifford Marion)
Description: When a particular phase of music theory is omitted from the contents of a treatise or textbook on that subject, the omission can usually be ascribed to one of two causes. Either the omitted phase is of little importance or it is not used in the music of the period on which the treatise or textbook is based. It is the purpose of this research study to discuss a particular phase of music theory that has been omitted or avoided by numerous counterpoint and theory textbook authors. The material in the contents of this work is based on a discussion of the melodic use of the augmented second in the music of the eighteenth century.

Metabolism of Hydrocortisone by X-Irradiated Rat Liver Tissue as Determined by the Porter-Silber Chromagen Method

Metabolism of Hydrocortisone by X-Irradiated Rat Liver Tissue as Determined by the Porter-Silber Chromagen Method

Date: August 1959
Creator: Pryor, Nan Webb
Description: The present study may be considered endocrinological and radiobiological in nature. The endocrinology phase was concerned with studying the changes in endocrine function following the application of a stress agent. X-irradiation was chosen as the stressor in order to determine any difference in effect of this stressor from others which have been studied, e. g. heat, cold, metabolic poisons. Liver slices taken from rats at various time intervals following whole body X-irradiation were tested for their ability to metabolize hydrocortisone from a Krebs-Ringer solution.

A Method for Calculating Foil Depression Factors

A Method for Calculating Foil Depression Factors

Date: June 1953
Creator: Workman, Billy J.
Description: As disc-shaped detectors are one of the primary means of measuring the neutron density, a better solution is desirable if the error due to the depression factor is to be made negligible. In this paper, an attempt is made to solve this problem in the oblate spheroidal co-ordinate system which most nearly describes the disc-shaped detector, so that solutions may be obtained that describe depression factors for detectors of varying thicknesses and radii.

A Method of Analyzing Linear Perspective for Presentation to Junior and Senior High School Students

A Method of Analyzing Linear Perspective for Presentation to Junior and Senior High School Students

Date: 1950
Creator: Lacy, L'Louise Dial
Description: The general purpose of this study is to develop a series of peep shows, or visual models, which will enable the young student to understand what the laws of perspective are, how they were found, and why his drawings will appear to have three dimensions if he follows the rules. The study is based upon a widely accepted idea--that it is much easier for most people to understand and remember a principle when they can actually see how it works. When rules are merely memorized, one is not assisted by reason, which is essential for useful retention.
