How Much Do Self-Disclosers Reveal to Professional Groups?

How Much Do Self-Disclosers Reveal to Professional Groups?

Date: December 1976
Creator: Lankford, Charles P.
Description: Previous studies of help-givers have stressed subjects' perceptions using nine generic problem areas and a list of 100 descriptive adjectives. The present study attempted to specify major personality variables entering into subjects' perceptions of adviser, high school counselor, college counselor, counseling psychologist, clinical psychologist, and psychiatrist. The personality variables of self-disclosure and risk were studied, as well as a comparison using the 100 descriptive adjectives. The results from 217 female undergraduate college students indicated that subjects revealed risky information to help-givers in the same manner that they tended to self-disclose. Findings also revealed that subjects tended to differentiate among help-givers in reference to the extent that they were willing to reveal risky information. Favorable findings with reference to validity for the Norton risk scale are discussed, as are discrepancies between descriptions of help-givers in the current study as opposed to descriptions of the same help-givers in previous studies.

Hyperspaces

Hyperspaces

Date: December 1976
Creator: Voas, Charles H.
Description: This paper is an exposition of the theory of the hyperspaces 2^X and C(X) of a topological space X. These spaces are obtained from X by collecting the nonempty closed and nonempty closed connected subsets respectively, and are topologized by the Vietoris topology. The paper is organized in terms of increasing specialization of spaces, beginning with T1 spaces and proceeding through compact spaces, compact metric spaces and metric continua. Several basic techniques in hyperspace theory are discussed, and these techniques are applied to elucidate the topological structure of hyperspaces.

The Hypothermic Perfusion of the Isolated Thyroid Gland and Its Release of T₃ And T₄

The Hypothermic Perfusion of the Isolated Thyroid Gland and Its Release of T₃ And T₄

Date: December 1976
Creator: Haenke, Richard F.
Description: Investigations have shown that the hypothalamus and pituitary respond to decreases in body temperature by stimulating thyroid release of T_3 and T_4 . This study was designed to bypass the control of the hypothalamus and pituitary gland and investigate the direct effect of temperature on the thyroid gland. Hypothermia was by an in vivo isolated perfusion of the thyroid gland. Radio-immunoassay was used to measure T_3 and T_4 concentrations. Significant increases were observed in animals perfused between 36º and 25ºc. These results indicate that the thyroid gland is directly effected by decreased temperature and that it is capable of exerting control over body temperature independent of the hypothalamus and pituitary gland. Lower perfusion temperatures produced no significant increases.

The Influence of Popular Music on Self-Disclosure Among Adolescents

The Influence of Popular Music on Self-Disclosure Among Adolescents

Date: December 1976
Creator: Gentry, David G.
Description: Seventy-five adolescent members of a local church youth organization completed Jourard's 40-item Self-Disclosure Questionnaire. The subjects were assigned to three groups, matched for degree of self-disclosure. A control group filled out Green's Sentence Completion Blank. A second group filled out the completion blank after listening to popular music while reading printed lyrics. The third group listened and also wrote a few sentences about the "meaning" of the music. Two judges scored the sentence completion blanks for self-disclosure. An analysis of variance of the sentence completion scores was significant at the .05 level. However, the Scheffe method revealed that only the latter two groups' means differed significantly, in that the second group increased in disclosure while the third group decreased in self-disclosure. Several factors are discussed which may account for the results.

An Investigation of Crisis Intervention Services

An Investigation of Crisis Intervention Services

Date: December 1976
Creator: Sammons, Daniel G.
Description: The purpose of the study have been: (1) to provide an explanatory, descriptive, and analytic viewpoint of the functions and structure of crisis intervention centers (2) to provide an intensive investigation of counseling and treatment practices in crisis intervention centers and (3) to relate the experiences that the writer has encountered as a resident counselor at Help House Inc. (twenty-four hour drug and crisis intervention center in Denton, Texas) to sociological, psychological, social psychological and philosophical constructs that deal with or pertain to crisis intervention, particularly in the area of drug use. The study indicates how participatory observation serves as an aid in acquiring insight into sociological areas such as crisis intervention centers. The role of the participatory observer is most important because concepts and theories arise out of actual situations.

An Investigation of the Relationship Between Performance on the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children Picture Arrangement Subtest and Social Intelligence in Children

An Investigation of the Relationship Between Performance on the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children Picture Arrangement Subtest and Social Intelligence in Children

Date: December 1976
Creator: Jester, Charles Franklin
Description: The Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC) Picture Arrangement (PA) subtest has often been assumed to be a measure of social intelligence. The present study compared WISC PA performance and performance on a verbal conditioning task (production of plural nouns) as a measure of social intelligence. Four groups, high and low PA with reinforcement, and high and low PA without reinforcement, were compared on production of plural nouns over two consecutive four-minute periods. The four groups did not differ significantly in the production of plural nouns. The present study, using verbal conditionability as a measure of social intelligence, found no evidence to support the assumption that WISC PA performance is a measure of social intelligence in children.

Irish Members of Parliament and the Home-Rule Bill of 1912

Irish Members of Parliament and the Home-Rule Bill of 1912

Date: December 1976
Creator: Burke, Kenneth Alton
Description: This thesis examines speeches made by Irish members of the British House of Commons concerning the Government of Ireland Bill (1912). The most significant source use was the Parliamentary Debates of the House of Commons, 1912 to 1914. The organization of the Irish political parties is outlined in Chapter One. The next two chapters deal with their view of Irish history during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The fourth chapter focuses upon the bill in committee, and the fifth chapter examines the more general debate on the bill. The conclusions of the final chapter suggest that advocates of the bill were motivated by Irish nationalism, while opponents were motivated by economic ties to Great Britain.

Life History Allocation of Energy to Growth and Reproduction in Gizzard Shad, Dorosoma cepedianum, in North Central Texas

Life History Allocation of Energy to Growth and Reproduction in Gizzard Shad, Dorosoma cepedianum, in North Central Texas

Date: December 1976
Creator: Fagan, Joseph A.
Description: Life history allocation of energy to growth and reproduction was determined for female gizzard shad. Absolute caloric energy allocated to eggs increased with age. The relative amount of production energy directed to reproduction increased with age up to 5 years and then decreased. Seasonal variation in lipids was studied. Quantitative changes occurred in ovarian lipids during the reproductive cycle. Carcass lipids varied seasonally. Age of sexual maturity was 3 years. Delayed maturity is attributed to high allocation of energy to growth enabling shad to outgrow intense competition and predation in pre-reproductive ages; there is little competition and predation in reproductive shad. Growth rates and condition factors indicated constant availability of food seasonally.

Physiological Studies of the Bdellovibrio-Host Interaction

Physiological Studies of the Bdellovibrio-Host Interaction

Date: December 1976
Creator: Dunton, Philip J.
Description: The purpose of this study was to focus attention on the physiology of the bdellovibrio-host interaction and to determine the metabolic requirements for this reaction. Since bdellovibrio is an aerobic organism, direct measurements of respiration, turbidity, and viable cell counts are reliable indications of the metabolic activity of the cells. It was determined that the metabolic requirements for the parasitic interaction are constituents from either metabolically active host cells or cells which are capable of at least some metabolic activity. The nutritional requirements of host-independent bdellovibrios suspended in buffer are not met by the presence or absence of viable or nonviable Enterobacter aegnes. Unlike the HD bdellovibrios, the HI bdellovibrios lack the ability to make economical use of their self-digesting processes.

The Posthumous Narrative Poems of C. S. Lewis

The Posthumous Narrative Poems of C. S. Lewis

Date: December 1976
Creator: Geer, Caroline L.
Description: The purpose of this study is to introduce the three posthumous narrative poems of C. S. Lewis. Chapter One is an introduction to Lewis's life and scholarship. The second chapter is concerned with "Launcelot," in which the central theme of the story explores the effect of the Quest for the Holy Grail on King Arthur's kingdom. Chapter Three studies "The Nameless Isle," in which Celtic and Greek mythic elements strongly influence both characterization and plot. The fourth chapter is an analysis of The Queen of Drum and its triangular plot structure in which the motivating impetus of the characters is the result of dreams. Chapter Five recapitulates Lewis's perspectives of life and reviews the impact of his Christianity on the poems. The study also shows how each poem illustrates a separate aspect of the cosmic quest.

Project Redeployment: A Financial Innovation, a Case Study of LTV

Date: December 1976
Creator: Ling, Robert Van
Description: The purpose of this study was to examine the aspects of redeployment in general terms, and then to present a case study of a specific redeployment program to analyze its effectiveness as a corporate financial tool. The first four chapters discuss the general and financial definitions of redeployment, as well as the objectives, benefits, and alternate methods of the operational asset form of redeployment. The specific redeployment program analyzed is the case study of Ling-Temco-Vought's use of the operational asset form of redeployment. The purpose of the case study was to determine if Ling-Temco--Vought achieved their stated objectives. An analysis of these objectives shows that redeployment was a success.
