Matching of Auxiliary Inlets to Secondary-Air Requirements of Aircraft Ejector Exhaust Nozzles

Description: Report presenting an analysis of the problems associated with matching secondary-air requirements of ejector exhaust nozzles and auxiliary inlets has been made for free-stream Mach numbers up to 2.0. The analysis indicated that inlets located in the free stream supply higher pressure recovery than ejectors generally require for optimum net internal thrust at Mach numbers above about 1.4. Net-thrust gains can be achieved by immersing the auxiliary inlet in a boundary layer where the inlet-moment… more

Measurement and Analysis of Wing and Tail Buffeting Loads on a Fighter Airplane

Description: "The buffeting loads measured on the wing and tail of a fighter airplane during 194 maneuvers are given in tabular form, along with the associated flight conditions. Measurements were made at altitudes of 30,000 to 10,000 feet and at speeds up to a Mach number of 0.8. Least-squares methods have been used for a preliminary analysis of the data. The agreement between the results of this analysis and the loads measured in stalls is sufficiently good to suggest the examination of the buffeting of o… more

Measurement of Respiratory C14O2 Activities

Description: We describe in this technical report a reasonably simple, easily constructed, system that allows the collection of time-course information regarding respiratory C14O2 with little special effort on the part of the investigator. The method described is centered around a small metabolism cage for the animal and a novel technique for counting C14O2. In essence, an air steam containing C14O2 is brought part the window of a think end window G.M. tube contained in a lead shield. activity detected by t… more

Measurements of the effects of finite span on the pressure distribution over double-wedge wings at Mach numbers near shock attachment

Description: Report presenting results of wind-tunnel measurements of the pressure distribution at low supersonic speeds on two rectangular wings of double-wedge section and aspect ratios 2 and 4. The pressure-drag coefficient at zero lift is found to decrease with decrease in aspect ratio at all values of the test Mach number. The effect was found to be most pronounced at Mach numbers at which the shock wave is detached.

Mechanical and Physical Properties of Uranium: Chapter 8 of Nuclear Metallurgy Lectures

Description: A knowledge of the mechanical and physical properties of uranium is important in understanding and explaining its pile behavior. The effects of irradiation on the properties of uranium will be dealt with in another chapter. However, it is important to know and understand the pre-irradiation properties of uranium prior to investigating the effects of irradiation.

The Mechanical Properties of Beta-Quenched Uranium at Elevated Temperatures

Description: The creep strength and tensile properties-were determined in vacuum for beta-quenched, derby uranium. The stresses to produce a secondary creep rate of- 0.0001 per cent per hr at 100, 250, 400, and 500 deg C were 48,000, sile strengths were 114,500, 35,100, 11,100, and 8,500 psi at temperatares of 28, 300, 500, and 700 deg C, respectively. The creep and tensile strengths decrease quite rapidly with increasing temperature in the temperatare range 250 to 400 deg C.

Media for Air Cleaning and Air-Assay Purposes : Final Summary Report for Period Ending December 31, 1954

Description: Work was completed on the high-temperature, high efficiency air filter. Technical assistance was given at a large-scale, privately financed run of an all-glass medium. Full-size filers have been produced in quantity and are offered by manufacturers; it is considered that commercial manufacture has been established. A survey was made of air sampling practices at 37 laboratories. Analysis of the survey results indicated that 22 different kinds of air-sampling filer media were in use among the lab… more

Metallurgical Examination of Resistance Thermometer Elements - Rear Face 100-K and Prototype Units 100-H Areas

Description: A metallurgical examination of several resistance thermometers for 105-KW were examined before startup (1). This examination revealed that the silver brazes joining the type 305 stainless steel blades to the type 416 stainless steel nuts were defective. The braze metal did not penetrate into the joint; the brazes were porous and appeared to be inadequately bonded to the type 416 nuts. After startup of KW, many of the thermometers became inoperative, and several were visually examined to determi… more
