Some Investigations of the General Instability of Stiffened Metal Cylinders 5: Stiffened Metal Cylinders Subjected to Pure Bending

Description: This report summarizes the work that has been carried on in the experimental investigation of the problem of general instability of stiffened metal cylinders subjected to pure bending at the C.I.T. This part of the investigation included tests of 46 sheet-covered specimens. Some Investigations of the General Instability of Stiffened Metal Cylinders 8: Stiffened Metal Cylinders Subjected to Pure Torsion

Description: "An experimental investigation of the general instability of reinforced thin-walled metal cylinders was carried out at the California Institute of Technology. The basic parameters involved were the spacing and sectional properties of the stiffening elements, the wall thickness, and the diameter of the cylinder. An analysis of the experimental data led to a suitable parameter for estimating the general instability stress of reinforced metal cylinders when subjected to pure torsion loading" (p. 1… more

Some New Problems on Shells and Thin Structures

Description: "Cylindrical shells of arbitrary section, reinforced by longitudinal and transverse members (stringers and ribs) are considered by us, for a sufficiently close spacing of the ribs, as in our previously published papers (references 1 end 2), as thin-walled orthotropic spatial systems at the cross-sections of which only axial (normal and shearing) forces can arise. The longitudinal bending and twisting moments, due to their weak effect on the stress state of the shell, are taken equal to zero. Al… more

Some Notes on the Determination of the Stick-Fixed Neutral Point From Wind-Tunnel Data

Description: "Two methods are presented for determining the horizontal location of the stick-fixed neutral point from wind-tunnel data. One method involves the solution of a mathematical equation; whereas the other method is a graphical solution for the same mathematical equation. The combined horizontal and vertical variation of the neutral point completely describes the stick-fixed longitudinal stability of airplanes that have large allowable center-of-gravity shifts" (p. 1).

Some Notes on the Determination of the Stick-Free Neutral Point from Wind-Tunnel Data

Description: "Two graphical methods are presented for determining the stick-free neutral point, and they are extensions of the methods commonly used to determine the stick-free neutral point. A mathematical formula for computing the stick-free neutral point is also given. These methods may be applied to determine approximately the increase in tail size necessary to shift the neutral point (stick fixed or free) to any desired location on an airplane having inadequate longitudinal stability" (p. 1).

Some Notes on the Effects of Jet-Exit Design on Static Longitudinal Stability

Description: Report discussing several types of jet-exit designs, including normal, beveled, and unsymmetrical shapes, and their effect on the stability characteristics of the aircraft. No deviation of the jet center line from its exposed path is likely to be obtained if a jet exist is used that is normal to the flow. Having a tilted or asymmetrical exit was found to adversely affect the stability of the aircraft.

Some preliminary results in the determination of aerodynamic derivatives of control surfaces in the transonic speed range by means of a flush-type electrical pressure cell

Description: Report presenting the use of a flush-type electrical pressure cell for measuring rapidly changing aerodynamic forces on a fluttering control surface. The use of the cell is valuable for the measurement of the aerodynamic forces. Results regarding the individual cells, integrated results, resolution of aerodynamic moments, comparison of aerodynamic with inertia moments, and comparison of static and dynamic hinge moments are provided.

Some pressure-distribution measurements on a swept-wing at transonic speeds by the NACA wing-flow method

Description: Report presenting results of chordwise pressure-distribution measurements on a 45 degree sweptback wing at transonic speeds. The two stations for measuring were located at the 18 percent chord from the root and the 87 percent chord. The changes in pressure distribution with Mach number did not indicate any appreciable net loss in section lift, but did indicate large increases in the section drag and diving moment.

Some Quicksilver Prospects in Adjacent Parts of Nevada, California, and Oregon

Description: Abstract: This report summarizes the results of reconnaissance study of quicksilver deposits in the northwestern corner of Nevada, the northeastern corner of California, and Lake County, Oreg. made in August 1940. The Lene Pine district, Nevada, the Silvertown and Red Hawk properties in California, and the Currier and Glass Butte properties in Oregon were included. The first two of these require further development before a definite opinion as to their value can be formed. The Red Hawk mine ha… more

Some Strength Tests of Stiffened Curved Sheets Loaded in Shear

Description: Report discusses the results of strength tests of several curved-sheet 24S-T aluminum alloy specimens stiffened longitudinally and transversely and loaded in shear. Curved-web beams and cylindrical shells were both examined in the tests. Results provided include the load at which the sheet began to show shear buckles, where the buckles occurred, and whether or not the failures involved rupture of the sheet.

Some Studies of the Reactions of Uranium Oxides with Hydrogen, Oxygen and Water

Description: Abstract: The purpose of this research was to obtain data that would be useful in predicting changes that might be expected to occur in the oxidation state and degree of hydration of powdered uranium oxides maintained for long periods of time at temperatures between 30 and 300 degrees C. in the presence of excess water, hydrogen, oxygen and possibly hydrogen peroxide. The reaction of hydrogen and oxygen with water slurries of U3O8 were studied at 100-300 degree C.

Some Systematic Model Experiments of the Bow-Spray Characteristics of Flying-Boat Hulls Operating at Low Speeds in Waves

Description: Report discusses the results of testing on several models of flying boats, the XPB2M-1, the XPBB-1, the JRM-1, and 11 other models to determine the effect of bow form on the amount of spray thrown onto the windshield of a flying boat in rough water. Several recommendations for reducing the height and volume of spray are provided. Any change in the hull form that softens the impact between the hull and waves seems to reduce the spray.

Some Systematic Model Experiments on the Porpoising Characteristics of Flying-Boat Hulls

Description: "This report presents the results of systematic model experiments on the hydrodynamic characteristics of flying boats, aimed primarily at developing a comprehensive view of the factors influencing porpoising and of their relative importance. The experiments 'radiated' from a given reference ship; they embrace changes, over reasonably wide ranges, in the value of each of a number of variables, treated independently. The experimental results are summarized in a series of 25 figures, each of which… more

Some Tests and Calculations Pertaining to the Dive Path and to Wing and Tail Loads in the Accident to Eastern Airlines C54B Airplane, NC-88814, Near Bainbridge, Maryland, May 30, 1947

Description: "Several dive paths were calculated for a C54 airplane starting from level flight at an altitude of 4000 feet and from an initial indicated airspeed of 200 miles per hour. The results show that, within the limits of the possible paths permitted by the evidence of the crash at Bainbridge, the speed of impact would be about 370 miles per hour and the time to crash would be between 12 1/2 and 15 1/2 seconds. Tail load calculations indicate that, with moderate negative acceleration of the airplane,… more

Some theoretical low-speed span loading characteristics of swept wings in roll and sideslip

Description: The Weissinger method for determining additional span loading for incompressible flow is used to find the damping in roll, the lateral center of pressure of the rolling for wing plan forms of various aspect ratios, taper ratios, and sweep angles. In addition, the applicability of the method to the determination of certain other aerodynamic derivatives is investigated, and corrections for the first-order effects of compressibility are indicated. The agreement obtained between experimentally and … more

Some Yawing Tests of a 1/30-Scale Model of the Hull of the XPB2M-1 Flying Boat

Description: Report discusses the results of yawing tests on a model of the complete hull of the XPB2M-1. The tests indicated that there was a tendency toward directional instability in the vicinity of the hump. The researchers concluded that at a certain range, the curves of yawing moment are discontinuous, and this has led to difficulty in preliminary test flights.
