Instability of a Pinched Fluid with a Longitudinal Magnetic Field

Description: The stability of a pinched plasma equilibrium with a longitudinal magnetic field superimposed on the characteristic azimuthal magnetic field of the pinch current is studied theoretically. The linearized solutions are developed as helical perturbations of the plasma surface, and the behavior of these is given for the different cases of uniform longitudinal, longitudinal field zero inside the plasma, and for helices of the same and opposite sense to the helix which describes the total magnetic fi… more

The Installation and Correction of Compasses in Airplanes

Description: "The saving of time that results from flying across country on compass headings is beginning to be widely recognized. At the same time the general use of steel tube fuselages has made a knowledge of compass correction much more necessary than was the case when wooden fuselages were the rule. This paper has been prepared primarily for the benefit of the pilot who has never studied navigation and who does not desire to go into the subject more deeply than to be able to fly compass courses with co… more

Instruction Manual, Mercury Relay Pulse Generator Model 1-1212C

Description: The Model Q-1212C Pulser is a single frequency (60 pps) generator whose output waveform is characterized by a rise-time of less than 4 mµsec and, depending upon the method of termination, an exponential decay having a time constant of 300 or 600µsec. The waveform approximates that produced by a radiation detector. The waveform approximates that produced by a radiation detector. The maximum available output from the instrument is 10 volts, positive or negative polarity, and is continuously adjus… more

Instructions for the Operation of an ORACLE Code for a Monte Carlo Solution of the Transport Problem for Gamma Rays Incident Upon a Slab

Description: A program has been coded for the ORACLE which will solve, using Monte Carlo technique, the transport problem for monodirectional, monoenergetic gamma radiation incident at an angle Θ, upon an infinite laminated slab of finite thickness. Each of the laminations (or regions) is itself an infinite, homogeneous slab of finite thickness. The code is designed to give estimates of energy deposition, energy flux, tissue dose rate, reflected and transmitted energy current, and the angular and energy dis… more

An Instrument Employing a Coronal Discharge for the Determination of Droplet-Size Distribution in Clouds

Description: From Summary: "A flight instrument that uses electric means for measuring the droplet-size distribution in above-freezing clouds has been devised and given preliminary evaluation in flight. An electric charge is placed on the droplets and they are separated aerodynamically according to their mass. Because the charge placed on the droplets is a. function of the droplet size, the size spectrum can 'be determined by measurement of the charge deposited on cylinders of several different sizes placed… more

Instrument-flight results obtained with a combined-signal flight indicator modified for helicopter use

Description: Report presenting flight testing of a commercially available flight indicator that combines heading, bank-angle, fuselage-pitch-attitude, and potentially altitude and radio-aid information in order to determine its suitability for helicopter instrument flying. The indicator was installed in the instrument panel of a helicopter meant for blind flying and was evaluated by performing prescribed maneuvers with conventional instruments and the combined-signal flight indicator. The indicator was foun… more

Instrument for measuring engine clearance volumes

Description: With the advent of the V type engine, a new method to measure the clearance volume in cylinders was needed. It was suggested that this measurement could be made by a process which consisted essentially of simultaneously changing both a known and unknown volume of gas by a known amount and then calculating the magnitude of the unknown from the resulting difference in pressure between the two. An instrument based on this design is described.

Instrument for Measuring the Wall Shearing Stress of Turbulent Boundary Layers

Description: "It is shown that at a smooth wall in a turbulent boundary layer the velocity profile next to the wall is dependent, aside from the material constants of the flowing medium, only on the shearing stress transmitted to the wall, even with pressure rise or with pressure drop. Consequently, the heat transfer of a small element that is built into the wall and has a higher temperature than that of the flowing medium is a measure of the wall shearing stress. Theoretical considerations indicate that th… more

Instrumentation and calibration technique for flight calibration of angle-of-attack systems on aircraft

Description: From Summary: "Data are presented on the instrumentation and calibration technique used in determining the position error of angle-of-attack sensors mounted on the fuselage of a 35 degree swept-wing fighter airplane. The true angle of attack was determined by the use of a nose boom with five angle-of-attack vanes spaced 20 inches apart on alternate sides of the boom. Errors due to boom bending, upwash around the boom, and vane floating angle were measured and corrections applied to all indicate… more

Instrumentation and Control of the Brookhaven Nuclear Reactor

Description: Safe startup and operation of the nuclear reactor requires neutron sensing instruments to cover a range of about 10^9. This coverage is obtained by a counting rate meter, a period meter, and a high level power indicator. At normal operating levels, the reactor is regulated by the high level power controller and protected by the high level trips. Emergency shutdown of the reactor can be initiated by any one of the 54 different conditions. Since these safety circuits are almost 100% "fail safe",… more
