The Initial Torsional Stiffness of Shells With Interior Webs

Description: "A method of calculating the stresses and torsional stiffness of thin shells with interior webs is summarized. Comparisons between experimental and calculated results are given for 3 duralumin beams, 5 stainless steel beams and 2 duralumin wings. It is concluded that if the theoretical stiffness is multiplied by a correction factor of 0.9, experimental values may be expected to check calculated values within about 10 percent" (p. 1).

The Injection Casting of Plutonium

Description: Plutonium metal can be injected into cold metal molds to form castings with thin walls. The operation is performed in a vacuum chamber, using an inert gas as the injecting medium. Sound pieces free of gas cavities can be made using either pure or delta-stabilized plutonium. This report describes the equipment and techniques used to cast a typical thin section piece in the form of a 6 in. diameter, 45' cone.

Injection of Electrons into the Astron Reactor

Description: "The injection of the E-layer electrons into the Astron reactor is described by following the electrons as they emerge from the anode of the 1-Mev electron gun through the various steps up to their injection in the reactor volume. Several problems are imposed by this injection process and their solutions are discussed briefly. The detailed mathematical theory and calculations will be presented in a separate paper now in preparation."

Injection Principles for Liquid Oxygen and Heptane Using Nine-Element Injectors in an 1800-Pound-Thrust Rocket Engine

Description: Memorandum presenting a study of six nine-element injectors for the liquid-oxygen-heptane propellant system in an 1800-pound-thrust rocket engine. The characteristic velocities for comparable injector types were about the same as those obtained from the two-element study. The level of performance was generally higher for the nine-element injectors.

Injection principles for liquid oxygen and heptane using two-element injectors

Description: Report presenting a study of injection principles for liquid oxygen and heptane made with two-element injectors, as the previous study only included single-element injectors. Eight injectors, produced by two spray orientations of each of the four injection processes, were investigated. Results regarding atomization after mixing, atomization before mixing, atomization without mixing, fuel atomization without mixing, and overall comparisons of the injectors are provided.

Injection Principles from Combustion Studies in a 200-Pound-Thrust Rocket Engine Using Liquid Oxygen and Heptane

Description: "The importance of atomizing and mixing liquid oxygen and heptane was studied in a 200-pound-thrust rocket engine. Ten injector elements were used with both steel and transparent chambers. Characteristic velocity was measured over a range of mixture ratios. Combustion gas-flow and luminosity patterns within the chamber were obtained by photographic methods" (p. 1).

Injection Trajectories and Beam Matching for the Cambridge Electron Accelerator

Description: "ABS>Injection trajectories were calculated for different injection conditions for the Cambridge Electron Accelerator, considering also the effect of magnetic fringing fields. The general problem of matching the emittance of the linac to the acceptance of the synchrotron in the transversal phase space is considered, and it is shown that this can be done by a set of two quadrupole lenses. In order to eliminate rudial betatron oscillations due to energy deviations of the injected particles, a pul… more
