Gas Plated Coatings on Metals and Alloys : Progress Report No. 6 and Final Report

Description: The object of the work performed under this contract was to investigate the possibility of gas plating copper base metal with (a) pure chromium metal from chromium hexacarbonyl vapor; (b) chromium-nickel plating from a mixture of chromium hexacarbonyl and nickel tetracarbonyl. The object of the work performed during the final month was to confirm the fact that the gas plating of chromium metal and chromium-nickel laminates free from nitrides, oxides and carbides was practical.

Genetic Resistance to X-Irradiation in Mice

Description: A comparison was made of the effects of X-irradiation on mice of the high leucocyte (LCH) count strain and low leucocyte count strains. Among 30-day old mice, the LCH strain had a significantly lower mortality after irradiation, but in five-month old mice there was no difference between strains. Weight changes after irradiation do not differ between strains, in either age group. Leucocyte counts of both strains drop to the same level several days after irradiation. The Grüneisen Parameter for an Einstein Solid and Under Finite Strain

Description: The Grüneisen constant, as evaluated from the equation of state, is obtained for an Einstein solid. the presence of a state of finite hydrostatic pressure is taken into account explicitly by means of Murnaghan's theory of finite strain, to obtain the Grüneisen parameter's on the Debye and Einstein models. Results are identical in the two cases with the corresponding values obtained without use of the formal theory of finite strain.

Grüneisen's Law and the Fusion Curve at High Pressure

Description: A method to determine the correction to Grüneisen's law corresponding to the effect of the electrons at high pressure. It is assumed that the lattice contribution to the pressure is small and that the equation of state of the solid can be approximated by results of the statistical Thomas-Fermi atom model for the electron pressure.

The Heat of Combustion of Calcium

Description: Calorimetric combustions of calcium metal were conducted at an initial temperate of 25 degree under an oxygen pressure of 50 atm. The energy of combustion under these conditions was to be 15,649 joules/g. The corresponding standard heat of formation of the oxide from the elements is calculated to be -628.63 +- 0.99 kjourles/mole. this value if 1.1% more positive than the previous accepted value.

Heat Transfer Fluids for Fuel Element Cans

Description: The maximum temperature in the interior of the fuel element could be greatly reduced by incorporating a liquid between the fuel element and the outer can to increase-heat transfer rates. The Helium Cooled Loop in the GETR

Description: The General Electric Test Reactor (GETR) facility is designed to irradiate the fuel specimens in a helium-cooled environment at 800 degree F and pressures from 315 to 400 psig. Thermal neutron fluxes in the fuel are of the order of 3 x 10(13) mv and the induvial test pieces, of which there are three in each facility tube, generate five kilowatts at heat fluxes slightly over 200,000 Btu per hour per square foot. High Altitude Cosmic Ray Neutron Intensity Variations

Description: Three groups of balloon flights carrying unshielded boron trifluoride counters were made from geomagnetic latitudes 10.1°N, 55.1°N, and 88.6°N. From the data obtained, curves of slow-neutron intensity versus atmospheric depth for depths less than 700 millibars are plotted. Hyperfragments produced by K^o mesons from K^+ charge exchange

Description: "Stacks of C-2 emulsion were exposed to neutral k mesons. These were produced by the charge exchange, in dense material, of K^+ mesons from the Berkeley Bovatron. Hyperfragments were found in these stacks. It is concluded that the hyperfragments were produced by K^o2 mesons in the K^o mode. These were generated by the decay of the K^o1 component of the K^o beam as would be expected from the Gell-Man Pais scheme. Infrared Spectra and Structure of the Crystalline Sodium Acetate Complexes of U(VI), Np(VI), Pu(VI), and Am(VI). A Comparison of Metal-Oxygen Bond Distance and Bond fFrce Constant in this Series

Description: Infrared spectra of solid NaXO2(Ac)3, with X=U, Np, Pu, and Am, have been observed. From the symmetric and asymmetric stretching frequencies of the O-X-O groups, approximate X-O force constants have been calculated and were found to decrease in the order kU—O>kNp—O>kPu—O> kAm—O, the respective values being about 0.705, 0.698, 0.675, and 0.612 megadyne/cm.
