Development of a Gas Injector System for Homogeneously Labeling Gas Storage Reservoirs

Description: "The laboratory experiments and field testing which were carried out in the development of a homogeneous gas labeling device are described. Detailed drawings of the injector and its most critical components are included. Recommendations are made for a production model of the device along with estimated costs of construction."

High Performance UO2 Program Quarterly Progress Report Number 2: July-September 1961

Description: The primary purpose of this joint USAEC-Euratom program is to obtain a better understanding if the maximum achievable operating characteristics of UO2 as a reactor fuel. During the program work will be performed in two areas that have been of concern to reactor core designers for a long time, namely fission gas release and central melting in fuel rods.

High Performance UO2 Program First Quarterly Progress Report: April-June 1961

Description: A better understanding of the maximum operating characteristics that can be achieved with the use of UO2 as a reactor fuel is the primary purpose of this program for Euratom and the Atomic Energy Commission. During this program work will be undertaken in two areas that have been of concern to the reactor core designer for a long time, viz. fission gas release and central melting in fuel rods.

The Singularities of the Riemann Function

Description: "This paper deals with the Riemann function for linear hyperbolic systems of first-order equations. the leading term in the singularity of the Riemann function is determined and interpreted. In addition to equations with distinct characteristics, certain equations with multiple characteristics are treated."

Power Tests for PRT Reactor

Description: Startup and testing of the PRTR has been divided into three parts, Design Tests, Critical Tests and Power Tests. This document is the third of the series and describes the performance tests which will be made under nuclear power and the general schedule of operation. Responsibility for the startup of the reactor has been assigned to the PRTR Startup Council. The Power Test Sub-Council, which has done the planning of the initial power operation, was established by the Startup Council. Operation … more

An Experimental Study of Phase Variations in Line-of-Sight Microwave Transmissions

Description: From Introduction: "The purpose of this report is to present an analysis of time variations in: (1) the phase (relative to a stable phase reference) if a 9414 Mc/s signal transmitted over this path, referred to hereafter as single-path phase data; (2) the phase observed at one receiving antenna relative to that observed at an adjacent antenna, referred to as phase difference data; (3) atmospheric refractivity as recorded by a microwave refractometer located at the Haleakala terminal; (4) the wi… more

Utilization of Radiactive Isotpoes in Coal Process Research

Description: "This is the fourth Quarterly Report on Task II dealing with Methods Development for Radio-Tracing of Coal Product Hydrocarbons With Tritium. The problem of radio-chemical purity of traces is resolved by developing a new method of labeling with tritium that generates essentially no highly tagged side products or impurities."

Some methods of surface analysis for the prediction of thermal resistance of metal contacts

Description: "Equations for the heat-transfer coefficient existing at the interface of two metals in contact are discussed. The results of applying the equations (with a graphical determination of the geometric parameters) to an iron--aluminum contact are presented. A method is given for performing the graphical analysis by means of a general purpose analog computer. Data are included that were obtained by applying this method to Blanchard ground stainless steel surfaces in contact. Statistical analysis was… more

Alternating Direction and Semi-Explicit Difference Methods for Parabolic Partial Differential Equations

Description: "The energy method is applied to study the stability of two types of difference approximations to parabolic partial differential equations, the alternating direction methods Douglas, Peaceman, and Rachford, and a new semi- explicit method. Each difference scheme is proved to be unconditionally stable. These results apply to parabolic equations with variable coefficients, defined in cylindrical domains with an essentially arbitrary bounded base."

Some Computational Methods for the Study of Diatomic Molecules

Description: "The present work describes some computer-oriented techniques for the application of the laws of quantum mechanics to the problems of determining basic structure of diatomic molecules. At times, calculations of the type described here yield results which can be compared directly with experiment to check the validity of the hypotheses and technique used they may predict the results of unobserved experimental phenomena; and, in many instances, they provide quantities which are necessary for the … more

Iteration Methods for Non-Linear Problems

Description: The methods of successive displacements or relaxation methods are investigated for a class of nonlinear problems. In particular it is shown that these methods are applicable to a large class of nonlinear problems arising from variational problems which yield elliptic equations. Constructive existence and uniqueness theorems are presented for the discrete problem and criteria are given for a practical method of obtaining solutions. The example of a discrete Plateau problem is used to illustrate … more
