Optimum Water Velocity for the Converter Reactor

Description: Abstract: "Two cases are considered. In Case I, the reactor water velocity is optimized to obtain a minimum annual cost (including amortization and operating costs) for the cooling system along. The optimum velocity for a 310 megawatt reactor is calculated to be ~25 feet per second, compared to the present design value of 30 feet per second. In Case II, the velocity which will give the minimum cost of product under the assumptions of varying power and production rate is found to be in the range… more

Effect of Epithermal Capture on η

Description: The purpose of this report is to investigate the effect of neutrons being captured before they are completely slowed down and have the chance to leak out and thus correspondingly increase the multiplication factor of the lattice.

Recalculation of Critical Masses of U and Pu Water Tamped Solutions

Description: A report discussing a method of computing the critical mass of U₂₃₅ contained in a water solution confined to a spherical core and surrounded by an infinite water tamper, a modification of said method in which the effect of the resonance fission and absorption is taken into account, and physical constants required to calculate the critical mass using these methods.

Note on the Non-Linear Kinetics of Circulating-Fuel Reactors

Description: The following report analyzes equations of motion for somewhat idealized circulating-fuel reactor that have been previously discussed, specifically the assumptions that the instantaneous power density is constant along the length of the fuel tubes, that the excess radioactivity depends only upon the average fuel temperature, and that the fuel temperature at the inlet is kept constant.

Dependence of Thermal Utilization and Resonance Escape Probability Upon Fuel Element Density in D₂O Cooled and Moderated Systems

Description: Abstract: "The effect of variation in fuel element density upon f, p in a D2O cooled and moderated lattice of cylindrical fuel elements is investigated. The CP-3 lattice is chosen as a reference. The effect of a source term in the fuel element is considered. f, p are calculated as functions of "a", the ratio of the modified fuel element density to the original (fuel only) density. Curves showing f(a), p(a) are included. It is concluded that a 1 per cent decrease in the product, f(d), p(a) is no… more

Results of Some Statistical Tests of Particle Detectors

Description: Abstract: The value of routine statistical tests of counter performance in the field has been investigated. The necessity for more elaborate statistical tests than those now used at the Hanford Works has not been indicated by this work.

Corrosion of Aluminum and Beryllium by MTR Canal Water

Description: Introduction: "In the early operation of the WTR severe canal corrosion of dummy fuel assemblies and a beryllium A-piece caused a great deal of concern as to the possible effects of long-time canal storage on such elements. A short-term experimental program was started to determine the causes of this corrosion and to correct them before any irradiated fuel elements had to be stored in the canal. The results of this program are presented here."
