The Heat of Solution of Neptunium Metal and the Heats of Formation of some Neptunium Chlorides ; A Microcalorimeter for Heat of Solution Measurements

Description: Due to a need of precise thermodynamical and thermochemical data on these elements and their compounds for the understanding and correlation of the chemical behavior of these substances, this report measures the heat of the solution of neptunium metal and the heats of formation of the neptunium chlorides using a microcalorimeter to measure the heat.

Conference on "Hot" Laboratory Design Held at Brookhaven National Laboratory on September 19, 1947

Description: From introduction: "This conference represents the first attempt by a project-wide group of scientists and engineers to collaborate on the problem associated with the planning and design of "Hot" Laboratories. The idea, as originally conceived by Dr. W. E. Winsche, was to discuss some general and perhaps some specific aspects of "Hot" Laboratory design with a small group of interests individuals from various sites."

Properties of Tin Oxide: Base Ceramics

Description: From summary: "Various thermal and mechanical properties were measured for sintered tin oxide-matrix compacts which nominally were composed of 99 per cent by weight of tin oxide, SnO2, and one per cent by weight of zinc oxide ZnO...The tin oxide body might be expected to give good service under conditions of severe thermal shock and in an oxidizing atmosphere at temperatures up to 1500Ā°F."

Preparation of Anhydrous Vanadium Trifluoride

Description: Report discussing a procedure for the preparation of anhydrous vanadium trifluoride. From abstract: "By selecting proper operating conditions and equipment, a method of preparation was devised such that anhydrous vanadium trifluoride of high purity was produced reliably in five pound batches." The method of preparation involves manipulating the starting material, vanadium pentoxide.

The Diffusion Length and the Utilization of Thermal Neutrons in a Heterogeneous Pile

Description: Abstract: "An accurate calculation is given for the quantity which corresponds to the diffusion length in the theory of the pile. The procedure is to establish a relationship between the diffusion length and the change in thermal utilization from a pile with infinite sides to one with sides of a finite length. The calculation of this change in the thermal utilization is then carried through. Approximation to the answer and numerically exact calculations are given in the report. The results showā€¦ more

Isotopes of Neptunium and Plutonium

Description: This report describes work done that originated in an effort to identify previously unknown isotopes of neptunium and plutonium and to characterize a few that were known for extension of the nuclear energy surface. The findings of this work results in two new light plutonium isotopes and one heavy neptunium isotope that were produced by bombardment of uranium with helium and deuteron ions from a 60-inch cyclotron and a 184-inch cyclotron. The chemical and experimental methods are described as wā€¦ more
