Surface Studies of Irradiated Graphite

Description: The effects of oxidation and irradiation on the microsurface structure of pile graphite have been investigated by measuring the surface area and pore size distribution of several samples. The results obtained for both oxidized and irradiated graphite samples indicate that changes in surface characteristics which occur are determined by the flux, temperature of irradiation, and gaseous atmosphere in which the radiation takes place.

Description: A method for monitoring radiation damage irradiations using the change of the electrical conductivity of graphite is described. Results of monitoring operations in a number of locations are given. An attempt is made to explain the damage rate found in the converter at CP-3. Effect of Certain Combinations of Wall Contouring and Design Exit Velocity Distribution on Prediction of Turbine-Nozzle Mass Flow

Description: Report presenting an investigation to determine if certain combinations of design nozzle-exit velocity distribution and wall contouring can alter the three-dimensional flow characteristics such that nozzle mass flow cannot be predicted by ordinary two-dimensional design techniques. Four nozzle configurations with different wall contours and velocity distributions were tested. Results regarding the comparison of analytical and experimental values of mass flow are provided.

A Preliminary Investigation at Mach Number 1.91 of an Inlet Configuration Designed for Insensitivity to Positive Angle-of-Attack Operation

Description: Results regarding an investigation to determine the horizontal- and vertical-tail contributions to the static lateral stability of a complete-model swept-wing configuration at high subsonic speeds. Generally, Mach number effects within the range studied and wing effects on the tail contribution were small and the overall trends of the data of the present investigation agreed with those which have been established at low speeds.

The Ductility of Brazed Stainless Steel Joints

Description: Abstract: "The ductility of Type 310 stainless steel T-joints brazed with GE-62 brazing alloy was measured at room temperatures 1200, 1650, and 1800 F. The measure of ductility was taken as the plastic axial strain required to crack braze fillets in T-section tensile specimens. At elevated temperatures, the ductility of as-brazed joints approximated that of the stainless steel, but at room temperature the brazed joints had only one-tenth the ductility of the base metal. Flow Diffusion in a Constant-Diameter Duct Downstream of an Abruptly Terminated Center Body

Description: Report presenting an investigation of the flow properties of a constant-outer-wall annual diffuser in combination with a tailpipe in order to come up with a configuration suitable for turbojet afterburners. Information about axial inlet flow and whirling inlet flow is provided. During testing, a vena contrata region formed downstream from the center body terminal and rendered the first 1/2 diameter of the tailpipe ineffective.

A Proposed Particle Containment Device

Description: Abstract: A device is proposed for confining charged particles to a localized region of space by means of the alternating electric field of a resonant cavity. The motion of single electrons in the field is stable. The limitations to particle density and temperature are discussed, and found to be too severe to allow the device to serve as a reactor, although it might be a useful laboratory tool.

A Preliminary Investigation of the Power Requirements of Slotted Test Sections

Investigation of 16-inch impulse-type supersonic compressor rotor with turning past axial direction

Description: Report presenting an experimental investigation using a 16-inch impulse-type supersonic-compressor rotor as a separate component, which obtained a maximum total-pressure ratio of 5.42 and an adiabatic efficiency of 0.76 at 101-percent design speed. The rotor could operate over a wide range of back pressures, but it did not obtain the design impulse condition.
