Determination of Ruthenium in Plutonium

Description: An analytical procedure for 0.04 to 1.6 percent ruthenium in plutonium metal was developed. Determination of ruthenium in metallic plutonium was investigated as part of a program for securing analytical procedures for various metals in plutonium. However, results of the investigation are given in this report with emphasis on the determination of ruthenium in plutonium chloride solutions. Specifically, this report is primarily concerned with the separation and determination of 40 to 400 microgra… more

Effects of Preferred Orientation and Grain Size On Dimensional Stability of Uranium on Thermal Cycling and Irradiation : Final Report -- Metallurgy Program 5.1.7

Description: The growth of alpha-rolled uranium rods on thermal cycling has been shown to depend on both preferred orientation and grain size. Preferred orientation appears to be a necessary condition for growth to occur; the extent of the growth depends upon the sharpness and type of texture developed and on the grain size. The highest growth rates occur in specimens with highly developed textures coupled with small grain sizes. The growth rates increase with cycling level, particularly in specimens of lar… more

Formation of a Vortex at the Edge of a Plate

Description: The flow about the plate of infinite width may be represented as a potential flow with discontinuity surfaces which extend from the plate edges. On the basis of a similitude requirement one succeeds in finding a solution of this problem for the plate of infinite width which is correct for the very beginning of the motion of the fluid. Starting from this solution, the further development of the vortex distribution and shape of the surface are observed in the case of a plate of finite width.

Geologic Features of Areas of Abnormal Radioactivity South of Ocala, Marion County, Florida

Description: From abstract: Areas of abnormal radioactivity south of Ocala, Marion County, Fla., discovered in 1953 by aerial survey, were investigated by surface examination and by 10 power auger drill holes. Interbedded clay, clayey sand, and uraniferous phosphorite occur in the areas of anomalous radioactivity. Miocene fossils occur at three localities in these beds which are evidently outliers of Miocene sediments on the Ocala limestone of Eocene age. The preserved outliers are southwest of the main bel… more

Interim Report on Fatigue Characteristics of a Typical Metal Wing

Description: Constant amplitude fatigue tests of seventy-two P-51D "Mustang" wings are reported. The tests were performed by a vibrational loading system and by an hydraulic loading device for conditions with and without varying amounts of pre-load. The results indicate that: (a) the frequency of occurrence of fatigue at any one location is related to the range of the loads applied, (b) the rate of propagation of visible cracks is more or less constant for a large portion of the life of the specimen, and (c… more
