The Cladding of Delta-Phase Zirconium Hydride

Description: Abstract: A study has been made of the cladding of solid and powdered delta-phase zirconium hydride is both red and flat shapes with stainless steel. The program included investigations of metallurgical bonding, both with and without the sore of metallic barrier materials. Types 304 and 347 stainless steel were used for cladding material. The intermediate barrier-layer materials used were niobium, molybdenum, a combination of copper and molybdenum, and a combination of copper and niobium. The p… more

Drying of Charcoal Used for Adsorption of Gaseous Fission Products from Homogeneous Reactors

Description: In homogeneous nuclear reactors significant quantities of radioactive inert gaseous fission products must be separated from the fuel solution for disposal. The present disposal scheme, which is employed on the HRT, is to pass the mixture of fission product gases and oxygen through a charcoal adsorption bed. the oxygen passes through the bed relatively un-adsorbed, but the radioactive inert gases are adsorbed and are displaced from the bed bed very slowly giving the gases a much greater residenc… more

Delta-Phase Zirconium Hydride as a Solid Moderator

Description: Abstract: "In a study of the preparation and properties of delta-phase zirconium hydride it was found that large, sound bodies of the hydride can be prepared by direct combination of the elements if the rate of the reaction is retarded by limiting the supply of available hydrogen. Specimens up to 1-in. diameter were prepared using this technique. Because delta phase zirconium hydride does not readily form eutectics with iron-and nickel-base alloys below 1800 F these materials may be utilized fo… more

Abnormal grain growth in nickel-base heat-resistant alloys

Description: From Introduction: "The data included in this report for Nimonic 80A alloy, for instance, represent experiments carried out to help clarify a production problem of grain-size control in an alloy which has been extensively used. The general procedure of the investigation was to carry out controlled laboratory experiments on samples of bar stock to find conditions of heating and hot-working which resulted in abnormal grain growth."

Beryl Resources of New Hampshire

Description: From Introduction: "The primary purpose of this work was to summarize and bring up to date the information on beryl resources as gained from investigations during 1942-45, to examine in detail certain beryl-bearing pegmatites discovered and developed in recent years, and to study other pegmatites and groups of pegmatites known or suspected to contain beryl."

Chemical Engineering Division Summary Report July, August, and September, 1957

Description: Development work continued on a fused salt process for the recovery of uranium from zirconium-matrix fuel alloys. The fuel is dissolved in a sodium fluoride-zirconium fluoride melt at 600°C by hydrogen fluoride sparging. The melt is then sparged with fluorine gas which volatilizes the dissolved uranium as the hexafluoride. The final decontamination and purification of the uranium hexafluoride are accomplished by fractional distillation. The testing of graphite as a container material for the hy… more

Isolation and Identification of an Ester from a Crude Oil

Description: Abstract: "A dioctylphthalate has been isolated from a crude oil by means of adsorption column chromatography. The ester was identified by means of elemental analysis, refractive index, and its infrared adsorption spectrum. Saponification of the isolate and examination of the resultant alcohol by means of infrared adsorption spectra led to the conclusion that the ester is a branched chain dioctylphthalate. This is the first reported occurrence of an ester in crude petroleum."

A laboratory Ivestigation of the Fluorination of Crude Uranium Tertrafluoride

Description: Ore concentrates have been converted directly to crude uranium tetrafluoride by hydrogen reduction and hydrofluorination in fluidized-bed reactors. Small-scale laboratory experiments demonstrated that this process can be extended to the production of crude uranium hexafluoride through fluorination of the uranium tetrafluoride in a fluidized bed. The satisfactory temperature range for the reaction lies between 300°C and 600°C. At 450°C the fluorine utilization is between 50 and 80 per cent. With… more

Synthesis and Properties of Carnotite and its Alkali Analogues

Description: A report which records the results of experiments dealing with the synthesis of carnotite and its alkali analogues. The work was primarily concerned with the preparation of single crystals suitable for detailed structural analysis, though some insight into the chemistry of the precipitation of carnotite was obtained.

A Coated Cast Iron Crucible for use with Eutectic Al-Si Alloy in the Temperature Range 595°-650°C

Description: The feasibility of the coated metal crucible as a container for eutectic Al-Si alloy has been proven by test. Small, enamel-coated cast iron pots has been proven by test. Small, enamel-coated cast iron pots have successfully withstood the chemically aggressive Al-Si alloy and the adverse influence of an oxidizing atmosphere for a period of 3 months at 725°C. A similarly coated castiron crucible containing 450 pounds of eutectic Al-Si alloy was successfully tested for 144 days in a jacketing ope… more

Precise Vapor Pressure Measurement At High Temperature

Description: "An apparatus using a silica Bourdon gage is described for the measurement of vapor pressures or dissociation pressures with an accuracy of 0.1 mm and 0.1 deg C up to maximum pressures of atmospheric or beyond and maximum temperatures of 650 to 1250 deg C. The method is applicable to corrosive substances, to substances whose vapor pressure is sensitive to slight changes in composition, and to substances difficult to purify of volatile contaminants which affect the vapor pressure."

Cyclotron Resonance Heating of a Deuterium Plasma

Description: Abstract: "The energy gained by a deuterium plasma, from a three megacycle per second radiofrequency field, was studied experimentally. A static magnetic field, in the form of a "mirror", was used. The coil of an rf resonant circuit, placed at the center of the machine produced a time-varying magnetic field parallel to the static field. This, in turn, induced an electrical field, in an azmuthal direction, which acted on the ions. When this was in synchronism with the cyclotron frequency, the io… more
