Acid-Mine-Drainage Problems: Anthracite Region of Pennsylvania

Description: Report from the U.S. Bureau of Mines discussing the anthracite region of Pennsylvania and the efforts to prevent coal-mine drainage into nearby streams. According to the introduction, "The purpose of this report is not to develop a practicable or feasible method or process of treating acid mine water but rather to present available factual and deduced data that may be useful in showing pH range over which the treatment is to take place and the sludge products most likely to be handled" (p. 2).

Analysis of means of improving the uncontrolled lateral motions of personal airplanes

Description: From Summary: "A theoretical analysis has been made of means of improving the uncontrolled motions of personal airplanes. The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether such airplanes could be made to fly uncontrolled for an indefinite period of time without getting into dangerous attitudes and for a reasonable period of time (1 to 3 min) without deviating excessively from their original course. The results of this analysis indicated that the uncontrolled motions of a personal airpl… more

Analysis of plane-plastic stress problems with axial symmetry in strain-hardening range

Description: From Introduction: "A simple method of solving plane-plastic-stress problems with axial symmetry in the strain-hardening range for finite strains were developed at the NACA Lewis laboratory during 1949-1950. This method is based on the deformation theory of Hencky and Nadai (references 7 to 9), which is derived for the condition of constant directions and ratios of the principal stresses during loading."

Analysis of the effects of boundary-layer control in the take-off and power-off landing performance characteristics of a liaison type of airplane

Description: From Summary: "A performance analysis has been made to determine whether boundary-layer control by suction might reduce the minimum take-off and landing distances of a four-place or five-place airplane or a liaison type of airplane below those obtainable with conventional high-lift devices. The airplane was assumed to have a cruise duration of 5 hours at 60-percent power and to be operating from airstrips having a ground friction coefficient of 0.2 or a combined ground and braking coefficient o… more

Analytical determination of coupled bending-torsion vibrations of cantilever beams by means of station functions

Description: From Summary: "A method based on the concept of Station Functions is presented for calculating the modes and the frequencies of nonuniform cantilever beams vibrating in torsion, bending, and coupled bending-torsion motion. The method combines some of the advantages of the Rayleigh-Ritz and Stodola methods, in that a continuous loading function for the beam is used, with the advantages of the influence-coefficient method, in that the continuous loading function is obtained in terms of the displa… more

Angular distribution of neutrons from a plane surface

Description: From introduction: "This report determines lattice losses by considering the angular distribution of the neutrons emitted from the interior faces of the lattice and the exterior faces of the target. The purpose of this report is to investigate this problem by considering the dimensions of the faces to be large compared to the total mean free path."

Annie Laurie Prospect, Santa Cruz County, Arizona

Description: From introduction: The Annie Laurie 'cranium Prospect, in the Oro Blanco district of southern Arizona, is located in the southwest quarter of Sect. 3, T233, R=13. The nearest United States post office is Nogales, about 25 miles east, and the nearest settlement is Ruby, a nearly abandoned mining camp about 3 miles north. Access to the Ruby area is by gravel road from US highway 39 at Kinsley or Nogales. The Ruby quadrangle (1940) includes the area surrounding the prospect.

Aviation Gasoline and its Component Hydrocarbons: Wartime Research (1940-45)

Description: From Scope and Plan: "As the table of contents indicates, the present report summarizes the important data obtained from the research on aviation gasoline during the period 1940-45, exclusive of the data on jet-propulsion fuels. The report is divided into an introduction giving the historical background for the work, two chapters, and an appendix. The first chapter presents the data in a series of 15 tables carefully cross-indexed and supplemented by 19 charts showing the composition of as many… more

Buckling of thin-walled cylinder under axial compression and internal pressure

Description: An investigation was made of a thin-walled cylinder under axial compression and various internal pressures to study the effect of the internal pressure on the compressive buckling stress of the cylinder. A theoretical analysis based on a large-deflection theory was also made. The theoretically predicted increase of compressive buckling stress due to internal pressure agrees fairly well with the experimental results. (author).

Calculated thermal conductivities of pure gases and gaseous mixtures at elevated temperatures

Description: From summary: "A method of calculating thermal conductivities of gases and mixtures of gases at elevated temperatures is presented. Results for carbon dioxide, helium, neon, nitrogen, and their binary mixtures are given for the temperature range of 273 degrees Kelvin to 800 degrees Kelvin. The calculated results for the pure gases are in agreement with the known experimental data."

Carbonizing Properties: Chilton Coal from Lorado Number 5 Mine, Lorado, Logan County, West Virginia

Description: From Forward: "The value of this survey of the carbonizing properties of American coals by a standard method lies in the comparability of the results on different coals. A secondary objective of the Bureau of Mines carbonization studies is to obtain information on the chemical and physical properties of different coals that may effect the yield and nature of the gas, coke, and byproducts."

The Chelate Process, IV. Process Flow Involving o-Dichlorobenzene as the Solvent for TTA

Description: Comparative studies of a series of halogenated solvents, as carriers for TTA in the chelate process for plutonium extraction, indicate that ortho-dichlorobenzene most nearly satisfies the requirements that are set forth. A complete process design is presented for use with this solvent, and flow data and equipment capacities are given for dissolver solution and for uranium-free fission product solution as alternate feeds to the process.

Compressive strength of flanges

Description: The maximum compressive stress carried by a hinged flange is computed from a deformation theory of plasticity combined with the theory for finite deflections for this structure. The computed stresses agree well with those found experimentally. Empirical observation indicates that the results will also apply fairly well to the more commonly used flanges which are not hinged.
