The Choice in Thorium Oxide Slurries for the Prevention of Caking in Circulating Systems

Description: A qualitative theory for cake formation in ThO2 slurries is presented. The sphere formation which occurs in "Standard" slurry can be explained on the same basis. The irregular and unpredictable yield strength is easily fitted into the theory. On the basis of this theory, the writer has been led to the conclusion that only colloidally stable slurries, or slurries with crystallites or comminution-resistant particles which are large enough to overcome colloidal effects (probably larger than 0.1u) … more

Estimation of the Thermal Conductivity and the Viscosity of Gases at High Pressure

Description: Few data exist for the thermal conductivity and viscosity of gases at very high pressure. The possibility of using gases for heat transfer media at pressures up to 100 atmospheres and above raised the problem of estimating variations in the conductivity and viscosity at high pressure. Generalized plots are presented which are based on the work of Enskog, Eucken, and Hirschfelder et al. Some pertinent data from Hirschfelder et al and from Hilsenrath et al are presented.

Laboratory Investigation of Icing in the Carburetor and Supercharger Inlet Elbow of an Aircraft Engine 3: Heated Air as a Means of De-Icing the Carburetor and Supercharger Inlet Elbow

Description: Report discussing the use of a twin-barrel injection carburetor and a supercharger inlet elbow to establish the relation between wet- and dry-bulb temperatures of the de-icing air and time required to recover from air-flow loss due to icing. The tests were performed at several power conditions, icing conditions, temperatures, and dry and humidified air. De-icing time was found to be a function of the nature of the ice formation and of the wet-bulb temperature of the de-icing air.

Development of Air-Cooled Engines With Blower Cooling

Description: With the aid of a heating device, the heat transfer to cylinders with conical fins of various forms is determined both for shrouded and exposed cylinders. Simultaneously the pressure drop for overcoming the resistance to the motion of air between the fins of the enclosed cylinder is measured. Thus the relations between the heat transfer and the energy required for cooling are discovered.
