Nomogram for Correcting Drag and Angle of Attack of an Airfoil Model in an Air Stream of Finite Diameter

Description: In experimenting with airfoil models in a wind tunnel, the magnitude of the forces acting on the model is affected by the fact that the air stream in which the model is suspended, has a restricted cross-section. In order to utilize the results for an airplane in an unlimited quantity of air, a correction must be made. The magnitude of this correction was determined by Prandtl by the application of his wing theory.

Resume of the Activities of the Aeronautical Experimental Institute, Rome, During the Months of May, June, July and August 1921

Description: This report is a listing of the different studies conducted by the Institute in May thru August of 1921. The aerodynamical section studied: the aerodynamical characteristics of a very thick concave-convex wing; the disturbance caused in a tunnel by the presence of a disk, placed in relation with a transversely infinite barrier; vertical pressure in a wing of low head resistance; the drag caused by two small doors in the sides of the fuselage. Some other studies conducted by the Institute includ… more

Some New Tests at the Gottingen Laboratory

Description: The tests at the Gottingen laboratory included: friction tests on a surface treated with emaillite, verification tests on the M.V.A. 356 wing, and comparative tests of wing no. 36 at the Eiffel laboratory. The examination of all these experiments leads to the belief that, at large incidences, the speeds registered by the suction manometer of the testing chamber of the Eiffel laboratory wind tunnel are, owing to pressure drop, greater than the actual speeds. Therefore, the values of k(sub x) and… more

Standards for Discharge Measurement With Standardized Nozzles and Orifices

Description: The following standards give the standardized forms for two throttling devices, standard nozzles and standard orifices, and enable them to be used in circular pipes without calibration. The definition of the standards are applicable in principle to the calibration and use of nonstandardized throttling devices, such as the venturi tube. The standards are valid, likewise, as a basis for discharge measurements in the German acceptance standards.

Wind Tunnel of the Bucharest Polytechnic Institute

Description: This report describes the Bucharest wind tunnel and presents numerous photographs and diagrams. The wind tunnel is of the closed- circuit type, the return being symmetrical with respect t o the longitudinal axis of the tunnel. Th e tunnel is of the horizontal type with a diameter of 3. 2 m (10. 5-ft.) a t the beginning of the entrance cone, and 1.5 m ( 4,92 ft.) at the entrance to the test chamber. The latter, 2 m (6.56 ft.) long, may be either of the open-jet type or enclosed in a cylindrical … more
