Survey of the acoustic near field of three nozzles at a pressure ratio of 30

Description: The sound pressures radiating from the exhaust streams of two convergent-divergent and one convergent nozzle were measured. Exit diameters were 1.206 in. for the expanded nozzle and 0.625 in. for the convergent nozzle. The results are presented in a series of contour maps of overall and fine 1/3-octave-band sound pressures. The location of the source of the noise in each 1/3-octave band in the frequency range of 30 to 16,000 cps and the total power radiated were determined and compared with tho… more

Reconnaissance for Radioactive Material in the Shinarump Conglomerate at Balanced Rock Anticline, San Juan County, Utah

Description: Abstract: A reconnaissance for radioactive minerals in the Shinarump conglomerate of Triassic age exposed north of the San Juan River at Balanced Rock anticline was made in July 1953. The purpose of the reconnaissance was to search for any exposed uranium minerals and to determine the favorability of the Shinarump for accumulation of uranium-ore deposits. No uranium minerals or places of abnormally high radioactivity were observed. However, nine exposed channels at the base of the Shinarump con… more

Preliminary Report on Geologic Studies in the Red House Cliffs Area, San Juan County, Utah

Description: From introduction: The main objectives of the Red House Cliffs project are to appraise the uranium possibilities of the area, to determine the areal distribution and character of the ore-bearing Shinarump conglomerate and to prepare a geologic map of the area. The purpose of this preliminary report on the Red House Cliffs project is to summarize results of the field work done from July 6, 1952, to October 31, 1952, and to present plans for future work on the project. This work was done on behal… more

The Critical Mass of a Spherical Reactor with Variable Intrinsic Buckling

Description: Abstract: "The critical mass both of an untamped and water-tamped sphere with parabolic radial variation of the intrinsic buckling is calculated by a perturbation method. The result is applied to finding the minimum critical mass of plutonium in water suspension with infinite water temper; the calculations show that the minimum critical mass at constant concentration may be reduced by an amount of the order of 7.6% when the concentration of plutonium is permitted to vary throughout the suspensi… more

Aerodynamics of the Fuselage

Description: "The present report deals with a number of problems, particularly with the interaction of the fuselage with the wing and tail, on the basis of simple calculating method's derived from greatly idealized concepts. For the fuselage alone it affords, in variance with potential theory, a certain frictional lift in yawed flow, which, similar to the lift of a wing of small aspect ratio, is no longer linearly related to the angle of attack. Nevertheless there exists for this frictional lift something l… more

Plutonium Production Analysis - Graphical Method

Description: In the a study of plutonium production, the analytical solutions of the various isotope production equations are difficult and time consuming when spatial variation of the flux is considered. In an effort to reduce the time and labor required to determine the integrated production of a given thermal reactor, a graphical method of analysis is presented. The method is based on the assumption that the reactor may be divided into a relatively small number of regions such that the flux in each of th… more

Flight Investigation of a Combined Geared Unbalancing-Tab and Servotab Control System as Used With an All-Movable Horizontal Tail

Description: Note presenting results of a flight investigation of a Curtiss XP-42 airplane equipped with an all-movable horizontal tail with a control system incorporating a combination of geared unbalancing tabs and servotabs. In order to increase the stick forces for rapid deflections without affecting the forces in gradual maneuvers, the servotab linkage was modified by incorporating a viscous damper in one of the links. An investigation of the arrangement showed that the control characteristics were gen… more

Flight Measurements of the Directional Stability and Control of a P-51D Airplane with a Horn-Balanced Rudder as Compared with Previously Tested Vertical-Tail Configurations

Description: "At the request of the Air Materiel Command, Army Air Forces, flight tests were conducted on a P-5lD-20-NA (AAF No. 44-63826) airplane equipped with a horn-balanced rudder. This rudder was fitted with an unbalancing tab as was the original product fan rudder. Tests were made both with the unbalancing tab in operation and with the unbalancing tab locked. The modification to the original vertical tail consisted of removing the cap from the top of the fin and adding 1.91 square feet of area to the… more

The Effect of Valve Cooling Upon Maximum Permissible Engine Output as Limited by Knock

Description: "A Wright GR-1820-G200 cylinder was tested over a wide range of fuel-air ratios at maximum permissible power output as limited by knock with three different degrees of valve cooling. The valves used were stock valves (solid inlet valve and hollow sodium-cooled exhaust valve), hollow valves with no coolant, and hollow valves with flowing water as a coolant. Curves showing the variation in maximum permissible values of inlet-air pressure, indicated mean effective pressure, cylinder charge, and in… more

Pion Resonances in π⁻-p Interactions at 4.65 Bev/c

Description: This note describes some results of the study of single pion production in π⁻-p interactions at 4.65 Bev/c, using the BNL 20" Hydrogen Bubble Chamber. It is well known that the observability of some of the particle resonances (e.g. 33 Isobar and η) varies markedly with the energy of the incident particle. The ρ meson has been observed in π⁻-p interactions at 1.25 Bev/c and 1.9 Bev/c incident pion energies. Evidence will be shown that this resonance persists with the much higher incident pion en… more

Absolute Coefficients and the Graphical Representation of Aerofoil Characteristics

Description: It is argued that there should be an agreement as to what conventions to use in determining absolute coefficients used in aeronautics and in how to plot those coefficients. Of particular importance are the absolute coefficients of lift and drag. The author argues for the use of the German method over the kind in common use in the United States and England, and for the Continental over the usual American and British method of graphically representing the characteristics of an airfoil.

The Caproni Seaplane

Description: The Caproni Company recently built a seaplane of unusual design. The main supporting surfaces consisted of three triplanes in tandem, the lower wings being attached to the hull, which was described as providing accommodation for a hundred passengers. On one of the first flights, the seaplane fell into a lake, nose down, and was destroyed. The authors wish to show that this failure could have been predicted.
