The general purpose of the model study was to check the hydraulic characteristics of all elements in the design of the outlet works, and to develop means of correcting any uneconomic, unsafe, or undesirable conditions.

Studies conducted on a 1:32 scale simplified model of the Southern Outfall Sewer provided general information on the relative amount of relief from surges to be expected from the pumping station and manholes in the sewer line upstream" (p. v).
