A review of instruments developed for the measurement of the meteorological factors conductive to aircraft icing

Description: Report presenting a review of the status of instruments suitable for the measurement of the meteorological factors conducive to aircraft icing. Nine instruments which appear to be the most promising for obtaining meteorological data are discussed and recommendations for their continued use and development are provided.

An Electric Thrust Meter Suitable for Flight Investigation of Propellers

Description: A lightweight instrument that utilizes resistance-wire electric strain gases to measure propeller-shaft thrust has been developed. A wind-tunnel investigation on a propeller installed, on a single-engine pursuit airplane showed that the instrument gave a reliable indication of propeller-shaft thrust to an accuracy of +/-2 percent within its calibrated range. No attempt was made to determine the relation of indicated shaft thrust to net propeller thrust.

Preliminary Wind-Tunnel Investigation of the Effect of Area Suction on the Laminar Boundary Layer Over an NACA 64A010 Airfoil

Description: Memorandum presenting a preliminary investigation made in the two-dimensional low-turbulence tunnel on an NACA 64A010 airfoil with permeable surfaces to obtain an indication of the stabilizing effect of area suction on the laminar boundary layer. Although the airfoil surface had many waves and irregularities of contour, the data corroborated qualitatively the theoretically predicted stabilizing effect of area suction on a smooth flat plate.

Investigation of the Kingfisher XAUM-2 Flying Torpedo in the Langley Full Scale Tunnel, TED No. NACA DE 327

Description: Report presenting an investigation of a model of the Kingfisher XAUM-2 flying torpedo to determine the pressure recoveries within the jet engine nacelle and to determine the effects of several changes in model configuration on the aerodynamic characteristics of the model. The effectiveness of elevons and tabs as control devices was also investigated.

Tests of the Landing on Water of a Model of a High-Speed Airplane - Langley Tank Model 229

Description: Memorandum presenting an investigation at the tank no. 2 monorail of the landing on smooth water of a scale model of a hypothetical jet- and rocket-propelled airplane designed to fly at transonic speeds. The test is part of an investigation of the feasibility of the operation from water of high-speed airplanes. The results of the test form a basis for evaluating the improvement in hydrodynamic characteristics.

Hydrodynamic Characteristics of a Low-Drag, Planing-Tail Flying-Boat Hull

Description: Report discussing the hydrodynamic characteristics of a flying boat with a low-drag, planing-tail hull compared with a conventional-type hull. The planing-tail model had more take-off stability than the conventional model and had lower hydrodynamic resistance. Information about the landing stability, variation of trim with speed, and spray characteristics is also provided.

Additional Abstracts Pertaining to Seaplanes

Description: "About 500 additional references pertaining to hydrodynamic design of seaplanes have been compiled, and the information is presented in the form of abstracts classified under six main headings:GENERAL INFORMATION, HYDROSTATICS, HYDRODYNAMICS, AERODYNAMICS, OPERATION, and RESEARCH. The compilation is an extension of NACA RM No. L6I13, entitled "Abstracts Pertaining to Seaplanes," by Jerold M. Bidwell and Douglas A. King. An author index and a subject index are included" (p. 1).
