Description: Report presenting an investigation of a 24-inch-diameter rotor for a supersonic axial-flow compressor in air up to an actual tip speed of 1654 feet per second and a maximum equivalent tip speed of 1765 feet per second. Aerodynamic characteristics at subsonic and transonic speeds of a 42.7 degree sweptback wing model having an aileron with finite trailing-edge thickness

Description: Report presenting an investigation at subsonic and transonic speeds in the high-speed 7- by 10-foot tunnel to determine the aerodynamic characteristics of a 42.7 degree sweptback wing with a 20-percent-chord and 50-percent-span outboard aileron. The investigation was performed in transonic flow over a bump on the tunnel floor and in subsonic flow on one of the tunnel side walls.

The effect of rate of change of angle of attack on the maximum lift coefficient of a pursuit airplane

Description: Report presenting an investigation of the effect of the rate of change of angle of attack on the maximum lift coefficient of a pursuit airplane equipped with a low-drag-type wing in stalls of varying abruptness over a range of Mach and Reynolds numbers. Maximum lift coefficients were found to increase linearly with increasing rate of change of angle of attack per chord length of travel up to the maximum rate attained in the tests.

Vibration Survey of Blades in 10-Stage Axial-Flow Compressor 1: Static Investigation

Description: "An investigation was conducted to determine the cause of failures in the seventh- and tenth-stage blades of an axial-flow compressor. The natural frequencies of all rotor blades were measured and critical-speed diagrams were plotted. These data show that the failures were possibly caused by resonance of a first bending-mode vibration excited by a fourth order of the rotor speed in the seventh stage and a sixth order in the tenth stage" (p. 1).

Stability Results Obtained With Douglas D-558-1 Airplane (BuAero No. 37971) in Flight Up to a Mach Number of 0.89

Description: Memorandum presenting measurements of some of the high-speed characteristics of the D-558-1 airplane up to Mach number 0.89. The results of the tests showed that the stabilizer incidence drastically affected the longitudinal trim characteristics above a Mach number of 0.80.

Description: Measured values of lift, drag, and pitching moment at a Mach number of 1.53 and Reynolds numbers of 0.31, 0.62, and 0.84 million are presented for a wing-fuselage combination having a wing leading-edge sweep angle of 63 degrees, an aspect ratio of 3.42, a taper ratio of 0.25, and an NACA 64A006 section in the stream direction. The effect of the propeller slipstream on the characteristics of submerged inlets

Description: Report presenting a wind-tunnel investigation to determine the effect of propeller operation on the characteristics of submerged inlets. The tests were performed with a model of a hypothetical fighter airplane powered by a turbine-propeller unit. The propeller had eight blades with thin airfoil shanks and dual rotation and the submerged inlets were placed in the fuselage behind the propeller and forward of the wing.

Stability and Control Data Obtained from First Flight of X-4 Airplane

Description: Memorandum presenting stability and control data from the X-4 airplane during the Northrop conducted acceptance tests. The data were obtained for a center-of-gravity position of about 22 percent of the mean aerodynamic chord. Results of the flight indicated that the airplane is slightly unstable, stick fixed, in gear-up, flaps-up configuration for a center-of-gravity position at 21.4 percent of the mean aerodynamic chord.

Some Effects of Stator Cone Angle and Blade-Tip Leakage on 40 Percent Reaction Turbine Having Rotor-Blade Caps

Description: Memorandum presenting an investigation of the effects of stator cone angle and tip leakage on turbine performance. A single-stage turbine with 40-percent reaction was operated with two stators and two stationary shrouds. The turbine was operated at an entrance temperature of 660 degrees R with total-pressure ratios from 1.25 to 3.70 and equivalent mean blade speeds from 166 to 655 feet per second.

Investigation in Simulated Vertical Descent of the Characteristics of a Cargo-Dropping Device having Extensible Rotating Blades

Description: The characteristics of a cargo-dropping device having extensible rotating blades as load-carrying surfaces have been studied in simulated vertical descent in the Langley 20-foot free-spinning tunnel. The investigation included tests to determine the variation in vertical sinking speed with load. A study of the blade characteristics and of the test results indicated a method of dynamically balancing the blades to permit proper functioning of the device.

Supplementary Wind-Tunnel Investigation of the Stability of the Jettisonable Nose Section of the X-2 Airplane

Description: A supplementary investigation on the stabilization of the Jettisonable nose section of the X-2 airplane has been conducted in the Langley 20-foot free-spinning tunnel. It was found that the nose section could be stabilized by the addition of curved fins which could be folded against the fuselage for normal flight.

Performance of J33-A-27 Turbojet-Engine Compressor 1: Over-all performance characteristics at equivalent impeller speeds from 6100 to 11,800 rpm

Description: The J33-A-27 compressor was operated at an inlet pressure of 14 inches of mercury absolute and ambient inlet temperature over a range of equivalent impeller speeds from 6100 to 11,800 rpm. At the design equivalent speed of 11,800 rpm, the J33-A-27 compressor had a peak pressure ratio of 4.40 at an equivalent weight flow of 105.7 pounds per second and a peak adiabatic temperature-rise efficiency of 0.745. The maximum equivalent weight flow at design speed was 113.5 pounds per second.
