Advanced Thermoplastic Materials for District Heating Piping Systems

Description: The work described in this report represents research conducted in the first year of a three-year program to assess, characterize, and design thermoplastic piping for use in elevated-temperature district heating (DH) systems. The present report describes the results of a program to assess the potential usefulness of advanced thermoplastics as piping materials for use in DH systems.

Testing and Development of Electric Vehicle Batteries for EPRI Electric Transportation Program : Technical Report for January 1985 - April 1986

Description: The battery is a key element in the acceptance of electric vehicles, and R and D efforts are being undertaken to improve battery performance and lifetime. In this electric-vehicle battery program, controlled laboratory tests were conducted to evaluate the effects of selected factors on the performance and life of the EV-2300 lead-acid battery manufactured by Johnson Controls, Inc. These factors included simulated driving profiles with different levels of peak power demands for vehicle acceleratā€¦ more

Some Issues Concerning Fluidelastic Instability of a Group of Circular Cylinders in Crossflow

Description: Since the early 1970s, extensive studies of fluid-elastic instability of circular cylinders in crossflow have been reported. A significant understanding of the phenomena involved now exists. However, some confusion, misunderstanding, and misinterpretation still remain. The objective of this report is to discuss, on the basis of the current state of the art, a series of the most asked questions. Emphasis is placed on the determination of the critical flow velocity, non-dimensional parameters, stā€¦ more

Acoustic Leak Detection for District Heating Systems

Description: An acoustic leak detection facility was completed and used to evaluate the capability of piezoelectric sensors, accelerometers, and capacitance microphones to detect and locate gas and water leaks in underground district heating and cooling (DHC) piping. Leak detection sensitivity and location capabilities for DHC systems were estimated from laboratory data and from data obtained from the underground DH system in Scranton, Pennsylvania, where acoustic background noise levels and acoustic signalā€¦ more

Reference Manual for the Environmental Theorem Prover: an Incarnation of AURA

Description: This document provides a complete specification of the input language for the environmental theorem prover. This language is essentially the same input language used by any of the programs designated by AURA, an automated reasoning program developed at Argonne National Laboratory. The intended audience is the user who is already familiar with the concepts and terms associated with resolution-based theorem provers.

Annex to 7-GeV Advanced Photon Source : Conceptual Design Report

Description: The Annex to the 7-GeV Advanced Photon Source Conceptual Design Report updates the Conceptual Design Report of 1987 (CDR-87) to include the results of further optimization and changes of the design during the past year. The design changes can be summarized as affecting three areas: the accelerator system, conventional facilities, and experimental systems. Most of the changes in the accelerator system result from inclusion of a positron accumulator ring (PAR), which was added at the suggestion oā€¦ more

Characteristics of the 7-GeV Advanced Photon Source : a Guide for Users

Description: In this document we present the characteristics of the electromagnetic radiation from various types of sources on the 7-GeV Advanced Photon Source (APS) storage ring. The sources include bending magnets, undulators, and wigglers. The characteristics are compared with those of other synchrotron sources when operated at their design specifications. The influence of positron beam size on the on-axis brilliance is discussed, along with the power distribution from these sources. The goal of this docā€¦ more

Searching for Fixed Point Combinators by Using Automated Theorem Proving : a Preliminary Report

Description: In this report, we establish that the use of an automated theorem- proving program to study deep questions from mathematics and logic is indeed an excellent move. Among such problems, we focus mainly on that concerning the construction of fixed point combinators--a problem considered by logicians to be significant and difficult to solve, and often computationally intensive and arduous. To be a fixed point combinator, THETA must satisfy the equation THETAx = x(THETAx) for all combinators x. The ā€¦ more

Practical Issues Relating to the Internal Database Predicates in an OR-Parallel Prolog: Extensions and Useful Hacks

Description: This technical report is being written to document and explain some of the insights the authors have gained during the implementation of two OR-parallel Prolog systems for shared-memory multiprocessors. We have been quite amazed by how much power and functionality can be achieved through the implementation of just a few primitive predicates. We introduce a few relatively trivial predicates which allow one to implement versions of findall/3, bagof/3, and setof/3 for the a multiprocessor environmā€¦ more
