The Chlorine Trifluoride-Hydrogen Fluoride System. Some Vapor Pressure and Conductance Measurements

Description: The possible existence of a stable complex between chlorine trifluoride and hydrogen fluoride made further study of this system desirable. We have therefore investigated the vapor pressures and specific conductances of solutions of hydrogen fluoride in chlorine trifluoride.

Critical Strain Value for Alpha Recrystallized Rolled Uranium Sheet

Description: Abstract: "The percentage strain at which, or immediately higher than which, grain growth occurs on cold worked alpha recrystallize uranium sheet, appears to be at approximately 2-1/2 percent reduction in thickness. Grain growth from 20 microns to over 150 microns has been indicated for this region. This phenomena is especially noteworthy when deep drawn uranium shapes are to be reheated for a coining or restriking operation."

Determining Sampling Reliability in Bulk Ores

Description: Abstract: "The problem of evaluating the method of sampling used on a particular uranium ore or concentrate is considered. It is pointed out that the purpose of this evaluation is to obtain data on possible biases of the sampling method, the way the sample is prepared for analysis, and the analysis itself. In addition, it is pointed out that some estimate of precision, either overall or individually, for each step is required. Examples of the use of the analysis of variance approach to these pr… more

Effect of Atomic Interaction Potential on Defect Production in Metals

Description: The cascade of displaced atoms in metals, induced by high energy radiation, has been investigated, with the assumption of a screened coulomb interaction between atoms. The problem was treated stochastically on an IBM 650 electronic computer for several different models. The comparison of our results with those for which a hard sphere interaction has been used shows only a slight decrease in the expected number of atomic displacements.

Exploration drilling in the Haystack Butte area, McKinley County, New Mexico

Description: The US Atomic Energy Commission conducted a drilling program in McKinley County, New Mexico, from August 19, 1953, through April 19, 1954, to explore the Jurassic Todilto limestone for uranium occurrences on the eastern, northeastern, northern and northwestern sides of Haystack Butte

Liquid Metal Fuel Reactor Experiment Monthly Progress Statement: January 1957

Description: A monthly report summarizing work perform by Babcock & Wilcox personnel for the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission. Initial contacts were made at National Reactor Testing Station and Hanford Works, design conditions for the proposed reactor vessels were reviewed, estimates of heating rates caused by radiation and the pluggage of fuel passages were computed, and design parameters for the LMFRE were established.

Neutrons from High Current Gaseous Discharges

Description: Abstract: "Experiments on the neutrons produced in a high-current pulse discharge in deuterium are described. With 15 kv applied to a straight discharge tube 30 cm in length neutrons are produced at ~1.4 [mu]sec after gas break-down in a pulse 0.1 [mu]sec in length. The yield, 10-7 - 10-8 neutrons per discharge, is quite sensitive to gas purity and discharge tube wall material. The axial asymmetry in neutron energy indicates that the neutrons were produced in reactions whose center of mass move… more

Notes on Degradation of Heavy Water Moderator by Ion Exchange Beds and Metal Surfaces

Description: Abstract: "Data on the isotopic degradation of heavy water used to deuterize deionizer beds at Savannah River Plant are presented. Also, the extent to which light hydrogen, chemically bound to aluminum surfaces may degrade heavy water is estimated."

Progress Relating to Civilian Applications During December, 1956

Description: A report about thermal conductivity measurements which are made on uranium, uranium-1.5 w/o zirconium, and zircaloy 2 for a program that aims to determine the feasibility of using clad specimens. Results from the measurements indicate that the difference in thermal conductivity values between uranium and uranium-1.5 w/o zirconium is less than the anticipated 5 percent.

Reconnaissance for Uranium in the Uinta Basin of Colorado and Utah

Description: Abstract: Weak uranium mineralization is widespread throughout the Uinta Basin of northeastern Utah and northwestern Colorado, in rocks ranging in age from Permian to Eocene. No commercial ore bodies are known, although formations there have characteristics elsewhere considered favorable for ore deposition.

A Simple Leak Detector for Tritium

Description: From abstract: "An ionization chamber of the integrating type was built that could detect a tritium leak rate of 10[^-13] cc per second within a few minutes, after a gas-collecting period of 16 hours. Electronic circuitry was avoided by using a quartz fiber voltmeter to indicate the rate of discharge of the chamber."

Soldering of Uranium

Description: Abstract: The joining of uranium to uranium has been done successfully using a number of commercial soft solders and fusible alloys. Soldering by using an ultrasonic soldering iron has proven the best method for making sound soldered joints of uranium to uranium and of uranium to other metals, such as stainless steel. Methods of soldering, other than the ultrasonic procedure, have been shown some promise but did not give reliable joints all of the time. The soldering characteristics of uranium … more
