Performance of Inconel 739 Buckets in J33-9 Turbojet Engine

Description: Investigation of the performance of Inconel 739 (a nickel-base alloy of low critical-element content) buckets in a J33-9 engine showed that Inconel 739 had an engine life at least equivalent if not superior to S-816 buckets operated at 1500 degrees F. Inconel 739 buckets had a small scatter in life and exhibited lower total elongation than S-816. Bucket life was less than that predicted on; the basis of stress-rupture considerations alone. The failure mechanism was probably influenced by fatigu… more

Performance of Pentaborane, Pentaborane - JP-4 Fuel Mixtures, and Trimethylborate Azeotrope Fuel in a Full-Scale Turbojet Engine

Description: This report summarizes the full-scale engine tests of pentaborane, pentaborane - JP-4 fuel mixtures, and trimethylborate azeotrope fuel. The tests were conducted in a full-scale turbojet engine at a simulated altitude of 50,000 feet and Mach number of 0.08. Engine speeds were 90 to 100 percent of rated speed. Pentaborane reduced the the specific fuel consumption to two-thirds that of JP-4 fuel. However, because boron oxide collected in the engine, the performance deteriorated with continued ope… more

Performance of Several Half-Conical Side Inlets at Supersonic and Subsonic Speeds

Description: Report discussing an evaluation of a series of half-conical side inlets mounted on the fuselage of a supersonic aircraft at various Mach numbers. Information about the maximum total-pressure recovery, asymmetrical operation of the twin-duct system, potential reduction in stable mass-flow range, boundary-layer diverter height, and engine mass flow is described.

Performance of supersonic ramp-type side inlet with combinations of fuselage and inlet throat boundary-layer removal

Description: Report presenting an experimental investigation to evaluate combinations of fuselage and inlet throat boundary-layer removal for a ramp-type side inlet in the 8- by 6-foot supersonic wind tunnel at Mach numbers 1.5, 1.8, and 2.0. Optimum combinations of fuselage and inlet throat boundary-layer removal showed gains in available thrust from 3 to 10 percent over the case of no inlet throat bleed. Results regarding variations of diffuser total-pressure distortion, recovery and external drag coeffic… more

Perlite Resources of the United States

Description: Abstract: This report abstracts the published information on geologic occurrence and distribution of perlite in the United States. Perlite is important in the growing light-weight aggregates industry. The geology and petrology of perlite are described and brief mention is made of mining, milling, processing, economic factors, and reserve figures where known. A table of analyses of the rhyolitic, latitic, and dacitic perlite, welded tuff, pitchstone, and obsidian is included mainly to show the w… more

A Physical Property Summary for Fluoride Mixtures

Description: This report presents a summary of certain physical properties that have been determined experimentally on the fluoride mixture that have been formulated at ORNL (Rers. 1, 2). These properties include the density, enthalpy, heat capacity, heat of fusion, thermal conductivity, viscosity, Prandtl number, electrical conductivity and surface tension. In addition to the experimental data, values have been predicted for the heat capacity and density of the other mixtures from the correlations of these… more

Pile Periods and the Inhour Equation Accounting for Delayed Neutron Groups from Fission of U²³⁵ and Pu²³⁹

Description: Calculations are presented regarding the effect of delayed neutrons in reactors fueled with mixtures of Pu²³⁹ and U²³⁵. Results are plotted to illustrate the change in thermal flux as a function of time for various positive or negative step changes in reactivity.

Pilot Plant Dissolution of Unjacketed Fuel Elements

Description: In the fall of 1952, a pilot plant batch dissolution study was carried out to obtain the data required for the design of the Purex Plant dissolvers. Particular emphasis was placed on the rate of dissolution and the efficiency of nitrogen oxide recovery from the dissolver off-gas. The results are presented in this report.

Pilot Plant Fluorination of Uranium Fuel Elements by Bromine Trifluoride

Description: The so-called Fluoride Volatility Processes refer to several proposed non-aqueous methods of processing irradiated fuel elements. In each of these methods, the uranium is fluorinated to uranium hexafluoride and then decontaminated by distillation. One of the methods, involving direct fluorination of the uranium by bromine trifluoride, has been under investigation at BNL since 1950; subsequently a pilot plant was built to study this step of the process. The objectives of the program were to inve… more

Plasters and Elastomers in Radiation Fields: A Preliminary Evaluation

Description: With the construction of nuclear reactors, a great deal of emphasis has been placed upon studying the effects of radiation on the solid materials of construction. It has become necessary to consider radiation exposure as an environmental entity along with others so established such as temperature, electrical and mechanical stress, chemical resistance, weather, etc. Problems concerning the study of the behavior of materials that are thus increased when radiation exposure has to be evaluated sing… more

Poisson's ratios and volume changes for plastically orthotropic material

Description: From Summary :"Measurements of Poisson's ratios have been made in three orthogonal directions on aluminum alloy blocks in compression and on stainless-steel sheet in both tension and compression. These measurements, as well as those obtained by density determinations, show that there is no permanent plastic change in volume within the accuracy of observation. A method is suggested whereby a correlation may be effected between the measured individual values of the Poisson's ratios and the stress… more
