Determining the "State of Charge" of Nickel-Cadmium Batteries by Farad Capacitance Measurements

Description: From abstract: "A rapid simple method has been developed for determining state of charge of the widely used nickel-cadium rechargeable battery. The method described is based on the experimentally verified relationship between farad capacitance and state of charge."

Low Background Nuclear Counting Equipment

Description: Abstract: Both direct and coincidence counting apparatus are described. The elimination of cosmic ray events by coincidence plus gamma ray shielding permits the reduction of counting rates far beyond that obtainable with shielding alone. By selection of materials and development of new components and techniques, the residual background count of beta counting equipment can be reduced to a very low value. Geiger counter equipment for routine laboratory measurements is described, have a backgr… more

The Significance of Urine Uranium Excretion Data

Description: Abstract: Urine uranium excretion data for persons exposed to uranium by inhalation are analyzed Data from both chronic and single massive exposures are included, and a generalized excretion pattern, applicable to any uranium compound absorbed by inhalation, is proposed. ...It is shown that it is not usually practical to use urine samples to monitor individual exposures. Such an evaluation is possible only with a suitable series of samples collected at known intervals past the exposure. It … more

The Effect of Noise on Pulse Height Resolution

Description: Report wherein "[a] statistical study of base line fluctuations is used to relate noise measurements with the resolution spread of a pulse height analysis system. The resolution is inversely proportional to the signal-to-noise ratio. The proportionality constant is derived on the basis of a normal amplitude distribution for noise. A review of noise measuring techniques is given and adapted for use with electronic voltmeters. The form factors required to interpret meter readings in terms of the … more

Some Variable Contributors to Natural Background

Description: It was suggested that radon concentrations in air and potassium fertilizers on the ground contribute appreciably to natural background radiation levels. The effect on natural background gamma radiation from radon and its associated daughters in equilibrium and from potassium in fertilizers has been calculated and found to be negligible. Background radiation intensities have been assumed to be on the order of 10 [mu]rad/hr.

Beta and Gamma Dose Rates From Terrestrially Distributed Sources

Description: Report that examines the dose rate of radiation in the air and in a test subject due to radioactive materials (uranium, thorium, and potassium) that are present in the ground. The test subject in these experiments is a water cylinder that is meant to receive radiation in a manner similar to a person.

Filters to Provide Nearly Monoenergetic X-Rays

Description: Abstract: Four filters for use with a 250 KVP pulsating X-ray machine were constructed to calibrate radiation detection instruments in the energy region below 200 KEV. Approximately monoenergetic beams of 63, 105, 150, and 180 KEV were produced. The spectral distribution was computer suing the formula of Kulenkampff. The energies were found to drop rapidly from the peak values. The average values were checked from absorption curves obtained experimentally and found to deviate from the computed … more
