Annual Report 1961

Description: This seventh Annual Report is a summary of some of the progress in scientific and engineering research and development carried on at Argonne National Laboratory during 1961. As is customary in this series, only those portions of the total program that have reached such a stage that they may be of general interest are recorded. Thus, a comparison with the Annual Reports for 1959 (ANL-6125) and for 1960 (ANL-6275) will reveal the description of a generally different set of scientific activities. … more

Automatic Foil Activity Counting Facility and Data-Reduction Program

Description: Report describing a transistorized automatic counting and recording system built for the determination of foil-activation data. Some of the convenience requirements of the system were that the output be more suitable for computer processing, automatic sensing of the type of count recorded, and ready availability of the data at all stages of processing.

A Computer Program for the Kinetic Treatment of Radiation-Induced Simultaneous Chemical Reactions

Description: "WR16, a program written in 3600-FORTRAN for a CDC-3600 digital computer, calculates, as a function of time, the concentrations of all the species taking part in the simultaneous first- and second-order chemical reactions occurring during and after exposure to ionizing radiations occurring during and after exposure to ionizing radiation of any chemical system (for example, an aqueous solution). Homogeneous reaction kinetics is assumed for the computation. The variation of electrical conductivit… more

Condensation of Metal Vapors: Mercury and the Kinetic Theory of Condensation

Description: Report issued by the Argonne National Laboratory discussing condensation theories of metal vapors. As stated in the introduction, "the objectives of this research then are critical analysis of condensation theories and data for metal vapors and experimental evaluation of the resistance to condensation for a representative metal such as mercury" (p. 18). This report includes tables, illustrations, and photographs.

Cost Study of a 100-Mw(e) Direct-Cycle Boiling Water Reactor Plant

Description: Report issued by the Argonne national Laboratory discussing a technical and economic evaluation of a direct-cycle light-water boiling reactor designed for natural circulation and internal steam-water separation. The reference 100-Mw(e) reactor power plant design evolved from the study should have the best chance (compared to similar plants) of approaching the 8 to 9 mill/kwh total power-cost level. This report includes tables, and illustrations.

Description and Proposed Operation of the Fuel Cycle Facility for the Second Experimental Breeder Reactor (EBR-II)

Description: Report regarding "[t]he Fuel Cycle Facility for the Second Experimental Breeder Reactor (EBR-II), the process equipment, and the operations to be conducted in the facility are described. The Fuel Cycle Facility is a plant for reprocessing, by pyro-metallurgical methods, the core and blanket material discharged from EBR-II. The reactor core alloy is uranium-5 percent fissium and contains about 46 wt.% Uranium-235 . The blanket material consists of uranium in which plutonium is bred. Core and bla… more

Development of an Electrical Resistivity Probe For Void-Fraction Measurements in Air-Water Flow

Description: "Work has been done on the adaptation of an electrical probe, developed by Neal for the measurement of local void fractions in mercury-nitrogen flow, to air-water flow. The adaptation is more difficult because of wetting of the probe by water. Various probe shapes and filming agents were employed without great success" (p. 1).
