Aerodynamics of slender bodies at Mach number of 3.12 and Reynolds numbers from 2 x 10(exp 6) to 15 x 10(exp 6) 5: aerodynamic load distributions for a series of four boattailed bodies

Description: Pressure distributions for a series of four boattailed bodies of revolution were obtained and compared with theory for a Mach number of 3.12, a Reynolds number range of 2 x 10 to 6th power to 14 x 10 to the 6th power, and angles of attack from zero to 9 degrees. Second-order theory adequately predicted the pressure distribution for regions free of the effects of cross-flow separation.

Analysis of Factors Affecting Selection and Design of Air-Cooled Single-Stage Turbine for Turbojet Engines 1: Turbine Performance and Engine Weight-Flow Capacity

Description: Memorandum presenting an analysis to determine the compressor pressure ratios and specific weight flows obtainable with single-stage air-cooled turbines for both nonafterburning and afterburning turbojet engines operating at a flight Mach number of 2 in the stratosphere. Critical Masses of Graphite-Tamped Heterogeneous Oy-Graphite Systems

Description: Critical mass measurements on graphite-tamped, heterogeneous oralloy-graphite systems have been made as a safety guide for certain oralloy casting procedures. Various concentrations were obtained by alternately stacking 10.5 in. diameter oralloy and graphite plates. In the relation Oralloy critical mass = constant x (fraction of oralloy in the core volume) -n values for the exponent, n, in the neighborhood of 0.70 were obtained.

The Determination of Fluoride in Plutonium Metal by Thorium Titration

Description: Abstract: "A titrimetric method for the determination of fluoride in plutonium is reported. Prior to a steam distillation of the fluoride, the bulk of the plutonium is separated by precipitation of the sulfate. The fluoride in the distillate is titrated at a pH of 3.2 with 0.001 M thorium nitrate, using chrome azurol-S indicator. Applied to samples containing 1 to 15 parts per million fluoride, the recovery is 87% and the precision on the 95% confidence level is +/- 0.65 ppm."

Determination of Hydrogen in Lithium Hydride

Description: Abstract: "A method for determining hydrogen in lithium hydride by heating samples with lead at 600 C, was developed. The hydrogen evolved during thermal decomposition of the hydride is purified and oxidized to water with cupric oxide at 400 C. The analysis is completed by collecting and weighing this water. Determination of lateral-stability derivatives and transfer-function coefficients from frequency-response data for lateral motions

Description: Report presenting a method for determining the lateral-stability derivatives, transfer-function coefficients, and the modes for lateral motion from frequency-response data for a rigid aircraft. The method is based on the application of the vector technique to the equations of lateral motion, so that the three equations of lateral motion can be separated into six equations. Two numerical examples are given to demonstrate the use of the method.

Development of Metal-Bonding Adhesives With Improved Heat-Resistant Properties

Description: "Results are reported of current studies at the Forest Products Laboratory to develop a metal-bonding adhesive with greater resistance to temperatures up to 600 degrees Fahrenheit that is easier to use than present ones. Most promising is a formulation of phenol and epoxy resins modified with hexamethylenetetramine and supplied for use as a dry tape supported on a glass-mat base" (p. 1).

Directional stability characteristics of two types of tandem helicopter fuselage models

Description: Report presenting a low-speed investigation in the stability tunnel to determine and improve, if possible, the directional stability characteristics of two tandem helicopter fuselages, one representing a helicopter with overlapping rotors and the other a helicopter with nonoverlapping rotors. Results regarding the presentation of data, directional stability of overlap-type fuselage, and directional stability of nonoverlap-type fuselage are provided.

The effect of lip shape on a nose-inlet installation at Mach numbers from 0 to 1.5 and a method for optimizing engine-inlet combinations

Description: Report presenting an investigation at subsonic, transonic, and supersonic speeds of the effect of lip shape on drag, pressure recovery, and mass flow of a nose-inlet air-induction system. Four lips of varying degrees of bluntness were tested on a fuselage model at a range of Mach numbers and angles of attack. Results regarding pressure recovery, net drag, and analysis are provided.
