Discharge Characteristics of a Simulated Unit Injection System
"Rate-of-discharge curves that show the discharge characteristics of an injection system having a very short fuel passage are presented. The rate of discharge closely follows the rate of displacement of the injection-pump plunger for open nozzles in which the maximum calculated pressures at the orifice do not exceed a certain value, which is dependent on the particular injection pump. With small orifices and high pump speeds, the rate of discharge does not follow the rate of plunger displacement because the higher discharge pressure results in increased leakage with corresponding decrease in discharge rate" (p. 1).
The Effective Width of Curved Sheet After Buckling
This report describes experiments made for the purpose of ascertaining the effective width of circularly curved sheet under pure flexural stress. A relation for the effective width of curved sheets is established. Experiments were made with circular cylinders compressed in longitudinal direction. The sheets were rigidly built in at the sides parallel to the axis of the cylinder.
Interference of Tail Surfaces and Wing and Fuselage from Tests of 17 Combinations in the N.A.C.A. Variable-Density Tunnel
"An investigation of the interference associated with tail surfaces added to wing-fuselage combinations was included in the interference program in progress in the NACA variable-density tunnel. The results indicate that, in aerodynamically clean combinations, the increment of the high-speed drag can be estimated from section characteristics within useful limits of accuracy. The interference appears mainly as effects on the downwash angle and as losses in the tail effectiveness and varies with the geometry of the combination" (p. 689).
Modern Manufacturing Equipment of the Ernst Heinkel Airplane Works
This report contains a description of new methods of fabrication, new equipment, and special tools, with a view to supplying data for design from economical points of view, as well as to stimulate the interest of other factories in improved shop methods. Some of the topics include the method and tools for changing the sectional shape of light-alloy and steel tubes, skin riveting, automatic strip insertion for drawing-sheet sections, silent beating tools, beam strap milling machines, drilling and countersinking tools for mounting standard parts, and tools for creasing thin sheets.
The Pressure Available for Ground Cooling in Front of the Cowling of Air-Cooled Airplane Engines
"A study was made of the factors affecting the pressure available for ground cooling in front of a cowling. Most of the results presented were obtained with a set-up that was about one-third full scale. A number of isolated tests on four full-scale airplanes were made to determine the general applicability of the model results. The full-scale tests indicated that the model results may be applied qualitatively to full-scale design and quantitatively as a first approximation of the front pressure available for ground cooling" (p. 1).
Scavenging a Piston-Ported Two-Stroke Cylinder
"An investigation was made with a specially designed engine to determine the scavenging characteristics of a large number of inlet-port shapes and arrangements and the optimum port arrangement and timing for this particular type of engine. A special cylinder construction permitted wide variations in timing for this particular type of engine. A special cylinder construction permitted wide variations in timing as well as in shape and arrangement of both the inlet and exhaust ports" (p. 1).
Tensile Elastic Properties of 18:8 Chromium-Nickel Steel as Affected by Plastic Deformation
"The relationship between stress and strain, and between stress and permanent set, for 18:8 alloy as affected by prior plastic deformation is discussed. Hysteresis and creep and their effects on the stress-strain and stress-set curves are also considered, as well as the influence of duration of the rest interval after cold work and the influence of plastic deformation on proof stresses, on the modulus of elasticity at zero stress, and on the curvature of the stress-strain line. A constant (c sub 1) is suggested to represent the variation of the modulus of elasticity with stress" (p. 539).
Tests of a Contra-Propeller for Aircraft
"Tests of an 8-blade contra-propeller of 32-inch diameter in combination with a 4-inch, 36-inch diameter adjustable pitch, metal propeller at pitch setting of 15, 25, 35, and 45 degrees at 0.75 R were made. The tests showed a significant increase in effective thrust of the combination over that of the propeller alone for value V/nD somewhat below those for maximum efficiency and without a corresponding increase of power absorbed. From 1/2 percent to 2-1/2 percent in propulsive efficiency was thus gained in this range" (p. 1).
