Antibody Formation by Transplanted Bone Marrow, Spleen, Lymph Node and Thymus Cells in Irradiated Recipients

Description: The role of the marrow as a site for antibody formation has been considered for many years. In 1912 Ludke reported the appearance of antibody in cultures of marrow cells obtained from previously immunized rabbits. Specific agglutinins for killed typhoid bacilli and lysins for ox red cells and sheep red cells were detected in the culture media 2 to 5 days later. However, the cultured cells failed to produce antibody when these antigens were added to the media. Similar findings by Reiter, Przygod… more

Artificial Cooling of the Columbia River By Dam Regulation Part 1

Description: In early July, 1958, it appeared that Columbia River temperature at HAPO would be near 24.5ºC by the end of August. River temperature were averaging 4º to 5º above 1957 figures and were 3º to 4º above the ten year highs. It seemed desirable to examine the problem to determine if any corrective measure could be taken, since it was apparent that production losses were imminent.

Atmospheric Contamination Associated with Inert-Gas-Shielded, Consumable Electrode Welding

Description: Apparent excessive concentrations of atmospheric contamination which were reported to be associated with an inert-gas-shielded consumable electrode arc wielding operation were studied to evaluate the potential health hazards. A study was made of the concentrations of metal fume and gaseous products of the operation as well as the spectrum of ultraviolet radiation. Recommendations for necessary controls were made.

Brief Review of Heat Transfer Problems Encountered in the Production of Magnetic Fields

Description: The design of internally cooled electrical coils for the production of high frequency intensity magnetic fields presents many new aspects and combinations of the familiar modes of heat transfer. However, the customary methodology appears to be sufficient for preliminary analysis and understanding of those problems. This methodology comprises the derivation of a qualitative, approximate equation expressing the relative performance of the various parts of a system, followed by an examination of … more

Bromine Exchange in Graphite-Bromine Lamellar Compounds

Description: A kinetic study of the exchange of normal and radioactive bromine in graphite-bromine lamellar compounds has been made at temperatures of 30° to 50°C. Natural and synthetic graphite powders were investigated. Two alternative mechanisms for the exchange, volume diffusion and surface exchange, were considered. The data were in better agreement with the diffusion mechanism. Diffusion coefficients of 10 -9 to 10 -8 cm2/sec and an activation energy of 11 to 14 kcal/mole were calculated for the natur… more

Climatic Charts and Data of the Radio Refractive Index for the United States and the World

Description: From Introduction: "This Monograph has as its purpose the compilation and analysis of the extensive radio refractive index data available within the Central Radio Propagation Laboratory of the National Bureau of Standards. This will be accomplished by presenting both tabulations of basic data for specific locations and charts for interpolation to any location."

Coating Removal Waste Loss Reduction : Final Report, Production Test 221-B-8

Description: The following report covers a test with the objective to demonstrate that the plutonium and uranium losses associated with the aluminum jacket dissolution could be reduced by substituting a water wash for the 5 per cent nitric acid wash following the coating removal and that this change would not adversely effect the product yield of decontamination in subsequent process steps.

Color Production From Energetic Ions Impinging On Metals

Description: It has been observed that energetic gaseous ions mark their region of impingement on certain metals in color. Under identical conditions of bombardment, multicharged ions of the same gas mark their impact areas with different colors. The colors are sensitive to the type and energy of the ion as well as to the metal bombarded. These colors may result from reflections from thin films formed by reactions at the target. Because the colors indicate that thicker films are produced with increased ion … more

A Combined Distillation-Electrochemical Method for Recovery of Hydrofluoric Acid

Description: Electrodialysis in an ion-exchange membrane cell was shown to be technically feasible for the concentration of an azeotropic mixture of HF and water. A flowsheet is presented for recovery of anhydrous HF by distillation and electrodialysis of the azeotropic residue. In the electrodialysis step, 2.6 kwhr of energy per pound of anhydrous product was consumed, with electricity at 1¢ per kilowatt-hour, the total operating cost of the electrodialysis equipment alone, including amortization, would be… more

Compatibility Tests of Various Materials in Molten Sodium

Description: Several compatibility test of various materials in contact in sodium under 500 psi pressure were conducted for 716 hr at 1500 F. Of the diffusion couples studies, the Inconel-beryllium system showed the largest amount al alloying. The reaction between molybdenum and beryllium resulted in the formation of two compounds, both of which were severely cracked in several areas. The molybdenum-INOR #8, and the INOR #8p type 316 stainless steel interfaces showed little if any alloying.

Contraction Losses and High Temperature Pressure Drop Determinations for Tube Bundles

Description: In some engineering applications it has become necessary to operate equipment containing small diameter rods or tubes oriented parallel to flow stream. In the case of several nuclear reactors such as the Plutonium Recycle Test Reactor and the S. S. Savannah Maritime Reactor, bundles of small diameter rods are used as the fuel elements. The situation also has application to heat exchangers. A method for accurately predicting the pressure drop characteristics of various bundle configurations woul… more

Critical Dimensions of Untamped Conical Vessels

Description: Abstract: "The need often arises for determining the critical chemical concentration of uranium solution in the conical bottom of a plant reactor or storage vessel, or the dimension if the concentration is known. This report describes the mathematical analysis of Poisson's equation for a spherical sector, which approximates a right circular cone. The ratio of the critical dimension of an equivalent sphere to the height of the sector for various sector angles is derived from a comparison of firs… more

Crystal Structure of a Sodium Cobalt Molybdate

Description: The cobalt and molybdenum positions had been derived from a three-dimensional Patterson function based on complete data out to λ-1 sin θMo≈ 1. From the separation of the separation of the Mo atoms it was thought that the structure contained free, unlinked MoO4 -2 ions, and this, together with the observed density and analyses for Co and Mo, suggested that the composition was probably Co2(MoO4)3. The paucity of structural information on complex oxide systems and the interesting properties, both … more

Decontamination of the KER Rupture Experiment Loop. Test Series B - Tests No. 3. Test Series D-Test No. 1.

Description: The first series of tests in the KER-REP-1 loop proved that a fission product contaminated loop could be decontaminated to a safe level for contact maintenance. Since a good decontamination process was available, there was much that could be improved about this process. Further testing of this process and several variations of other processes have been scheduled. The evaluation of these processes includes specific decontamination factors, process corrosion, and loop activity reduction factors (… more

The Deflecting Mode in the Circular Iris-Loaded Waveguide of a RF Particle Separator

Description: The rf particle separator, proposed in 1959 by W.K.H. Panofsky and now in preparation for the Brookhaven Alternating Gradient Synchrotron, required a rf structure which gives a transverse impulse to a passing relativistic particle. In order to produce an accumulative transverse deflection of a traveling charged particle with an electromagnetic field, it is necessary that the field contains a synchronous component and in principle, waveguides and cavities are equivalent with respect to the parti… more
