Aerodynamic Loads on Tails at High Angles of Attack and Sideslip

Description: "Results are presented for the loads and moments acting on the individual tail surfaces of a body-tail combination over a wide range of angles of attack and sideslip. The effects of forebody length and panel-panel interference on the characteristics are included. It is shown that large nonlinear variations in these loads and moments, which occur at some combinations of angle of attack and sideslip, cannot be predicted by low-angle theory" (p. 1).

Analysis of Wing Loads on a Flexible Swept-Wing Jet Bomber During Push-Pull Maneuvers

Description: Report presenting measurements of the loads of the wing of a Boeing B-47A medium bomber using strain-gage instrumentation during 23 symmetrical push-pull maneuvers at a variety of altitudes, Mach numbers, and gross weights. Arrangements of jet engine and airframe for increased range

Description: Report presenting an evaluation of a number of factors affecting engine-airframe arrangements in terms of range. Appropriate equations are developed and evaluated for a range of Mach numbers, ramjet and turbojet engines at several cycle temperatures, and two airplane lift-drag ratios. Some of the factors explored include inlet locations, jet cant for lift, engine moments for trim, a combination of the three factors, and the use of boundary layer in the engine.

Calculated Effect of Some Airplane Handling Techniques on the Ground-Run Distance in Landing on Slippery Runways

Description: Note presenting some calculations made on the basis of simplifying assumptions to determine the effect on the ground-run distance of maintaining a nose-high attitude instead of a three-point attitude in landings of several types of jet airplanes on slippery runways. Chemical Engineering Division Summary Report for January, February, and March 1957

Description: A fused fluoride process for dissolution of zirconium-uranium fuel alloys is being developed. The alloy is dissolved in an equimolar sodium fluoride-zirconium fluoride melt at 600°C by sparging the system with hydrogen fluoride. The uranium is volatilized from the melt as the hexafluoride by a sparging operation with fluorine or bromine pentafluoride vapor. This product is then decontaminated and purified by fractional distillation.

Determination of Thorium in the Parts Per Million Range in Rocks

Description: Abstract: "A procedure for the determination of thorium in the concentration range of 0.2 to 10 parts per million ThO2 in felsic or mafic rocks. Thorium is extracted by mesityl oxide and purified by iodate precipitation from nitric acid medium containing tartaric acid and hydrogen peroxide. The thorium is determined spectrophotometrically with thoron from meso-tartaric acid medium."

Effect of Core Corrosion Sample Assembly on HRT Critical Concentration
