The Effect of Compression Ratio on Knock Limits of High-Performance Fuels in a CFR Engine 1: Blends of Triptane and 28-R Fuel

Description: Report discussing the knock-limited performance of blends of triptane and 28-R fuel in an F-4 engine at three sets of conditions and three compression ratios. The knock limits of the triptane blends were more sensitive to compression ratio than the 28-R fuel, and the sensitivities of the blends increased as the severity of other engine conditions increased.

The Effect of Ethylene Dibromide on the Knock-Limited Performance of Leaded and Nonleaded S Reference Fuel

Description: Report discussing testing to determine the effect of ethylene dibromide on the knock-limited performance of S reference fuel. An increase in ethylene-dibromide content did appear to decrease the knock-limited performance of the fuel up to a certain point and at all but the extremes of fuel-air mixtures.

Effect of Fuel Volatility and Mixture Temperature on the Knocking Characteristics of a Liquid-Cooled Single-Cylinder Test Engine

Description: Report discussing an investigation to determine the effect of fuel volatility on the relation between mixture temperature and knock-limited performance on a liquid-cooled single-cylinder test engine. The mixture temperature at which the curve of indicated mean effective pressure plotted against mixture temperature becomes nonlinear was found to be independent of fuel volatility. Description: Report discussing the effect of internal coolants on the knock-limited performance of a liquid-cooled multicylinder aircraft engine. Both water and water-ethanol mixtures were tested at several carburetor-air temperatures. Effect of Mach and Reynolds Numbers on the Maximum Lift Coefficient Obtainable in Gradual and Abrupt Stalls of a Pursuit Airplane Equipped With a Low-Drag Wing

Description: Report discussing flight tests on a low-drag wing pursuit airplane to determine the effects of Mach and Reynolds numbers on the maximum lift coefficient obtainable in gradual and abrupt stalls. The obtainable maximum lift coefficient was found to be greatly affected by the Mach and Reynolds numbers in gradual stall. In abrupt stalls, the maximum lift coefficient was affected by the Mach number, but not the Reynolds number.

The Effect of Modified Baffles and Auxiliary-Cooling Ducts on the Cooling of a Double-Row Radial Engine

Description: Report discussing testing to determine the cooling effect of modified baffles and auxiliary-cooling ducts on the rear-row cylinders of a double-row radial engine. The modified baffles were found to reduce the temperatures of the exhaust-valve seats, but did not have an effect on the valve-guide temperatures. The auxiliary-cooling ducts reduced temperatures of the exhaust-valve seats and rear spark plug gaskets.

The effect of xylidines on the load-carrying capacity of an aircraft-engine oil 1

Description: Report presenting testing to determine the effect of xylidines on the load-carrying capacity of aircraft-engine oil in several test devices. Lubricating oil and lubricating oil with xylidines added was tested in four different testing machines. In all of the experiments, adding the xylidines made the oil a poorer lubricant in the boundary region of lubrication, where metal-to-metal contact occurs.
