Preliminary Investigation of the Effect of Compressibility on the Maximum Lift Coefficient, Special Report

Description: "Preliminary data are presented on the variation of the maximum lift coefficient with Mach number. The data were obtained from tests in the 8-foot high-speed tunnel of three NACA 16-series airfoils of 1-foot chord. Measurements consisted primarily of pressure-distribution measurements in order to illustrate the nature of the phenomena. It was found that the maximum lift coefficient of airfoils is markedly affected by compressibility even at Mach numbers as low as 0.2" (p. 1).

Part-Throttle Operation and Control of a Piston-Ported Two-Stroke Cylinder

Description: Report presenting a study of a single-cylinder piston-ported two-stroke engine in order to investigate means of obtaining reliable operation under idling conditions. The fuel-consumption characteristics were also studied over the useful range of speeds and loads. Results regarding illuminating gas, vaporized gasoline, gasoline injection, injected safety fuel, and brake specific fuel consumption are provided.

The Coupling of Flexural Propeller Vibrations with the Torsional Crankshaft Vibrations

Description: The exact mathematical treatment of the problem is possible by replacing the propeller blade by a homogeneous prismatic rod. Conclusions can them be drawn as to the behavior of an actual propeller, since tests on propeller blades have indicated a qualitative agreement with the homogeneous rod. The natural frequencies are determined and the stressing of the systems under the various vibration modes are discussed.

Description: "An approximate theory of buffeting is here presented, based on the assumption of harmonic disturbing forces. Two cases of buffeting are considered: namely, for a tail angle of attack greater and less than the stalling angle, respectively. Effect of Rivet Holes on the Ultimate Strength Developed by 24S-T and Alclad 75S-T Sheet in Incomplete Diagonal Tension

Description: Strength tests were made of a number of 24S-T and Alclad 75S-T aluminum-alloy shear webs to determine the effect of rivet or bolt holes on the shear strength. Data were obtained for webs which approached a condition of pure shear stress as well as for webs with well-developed diagonal tension. Representative Operating Charts of Propellers Tested in the NACA 20-Foot Propeller-Research Tunnel

Description: Report presents the results of tests of full-scale propellers made in the 20-foot propeller-research tunnel (PRT) at the Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory. The power coefficients of all dual-rotating propellers in the report represent the sum of the power coefficients of the front and rear propellers and are for the test conditions in which blade angles of the front and rear propellers were set to absorb approximately equal power at peak efficiency only.

Full-Scale Tunnel Tests of a Flying Model of the Curtiss XP-55 Airplane

Description: Report presenting testing in the full-scale tunnel to provide data for estimating the longitudinal stability and control characteristics of the Curtis XP-55 airplane. Testing included lift, drag, pitching-moment, hinge-moment, and elevator pressure measurements for various combinations of angle of attack, elevator deflection, and elevator tab settings. The results of the force tests and some correlation of the results of the force tests and the pressure measurements are presented in the report.
