The Design of Cooling Ducts With Special Reference to the Boundary Layer at the Inlet

Description: "A study has been made of underslung cooling ducts with special references to the problems presented by the boundary layer on the fuselage skin. It was found that good flow can be obtained in such ducts by (1) making the inlet opening of such size that the mean inlet velocity is about 0.6 the free-stream velocity and (2) providing vanes behind as well as ahead of the radiator. Description: Report presenting an investigation in the 7- by 10-foot wind tunnel of three plain ailerons on an NACA 23012 wing with full-span combinations of Fowler and split-type flaps. Static rolling, yawing, and hinge moments were determined and are presented for several angles of attack and flap deflection. The results indicated that a plain sealed aileron with internal balance will provide lateral control for airplanes equipped with full-span combinations of slotted and split-type flaps.

Description: "The thermal properties are presented for the exhaust heated wing de-icing system of a Lockheed 12-A airplane which has successfully prevented a wing icing in 25 hours of flying in various icing conditions. The quantities of heat supplied for de-icing of the wings under various conditions were measured and are presented. The Reaction Jet as a Means of Propulsion at High Speeds

Description: Report presenting a simple equation that can be used to facilitate the appraisal of the conventional jet as a means of propulsion. The equation can be used to estimate the performance of a large variety of aeropropulsive devices. The results using this equation indicate that attainable propulsive efficiencies at high speeds below sonic velocity are certain to be lower than is common at low speeds with the conventional propeller.
