Description: Report presenting a review of the status of instruments suitable for the measurement of the meteorological factors conducive to aircraft icing. Nine instruments which appear to be the most promising for obtaining meteorological data are discussed and recommendations for their continued use and development are provided.

An Electric Thrust Meter Suitable for Flight Investigation of Propellers

Description: A lightweight instrument that utilizes resistance-wire electric strain gases to measure propeller-shaft thrust has been developed. A wind-tunnel investigation on a propeller installed, on a single-engine pursuit airplane showed that the instrument gave a reliable indication of propeller-shaft thrust to an accuracy of +/-2 percent within its calibrated range. No attempt was made to determine the relation of indicated shaft thrust to net propeller thrust.

Investigation of the Penetration of an Air Jet Directed Perpendicularly to an Air Stream

Description: Note presenting an experimental investigation to determine the penetration of a circular air jet directed perpendicularly to an air stream as a function of jet density, jet velocity, air-stream density, air-stream velocity, jet diameter, and distance downstream from the jet. The penetration was determined for nearly constant values of air-stream density at two tunnel velocities, four jet diameters, four positions downstream of the jet, and for a large range of jet velocities and densities.

Investigation of Flow Coefficient of Circular, Square, and Elliptical Orifices at High Pressure Ratios

Description: Note presenting an experimental investigation conducted to determine the orifice coefficient of a jet directed perpendicularly to an air stream as a function of pressure ratio and jet Reynolds number for circular, square, and elliptical orifices. Power-Off Tests of the Northrop N9M-2 Tailless Airplane in the 40- by 80-Foot Wind Tunnel

Description: Report discussing tests on the N9M-2 airplane to evaluate the airplane efficiency factor and to investigate the characteristics of the aeroboost in the elevon control system. The efficiency factor compared reasonably well to conventional airplanes and the aeroboost system and valve-chatter tests were satisfactory.

Icing Properties of Noncyclonic Winter Stratus Clouds

Description: Note presenting measurements of the vertical distribution of liquid water concentration and drop size in winter stratus clouds in the absence of significant cyclonic or frontal activity. Tests on Stiffened Circular Cylinders

Description: "Compressive tests were made of two series of stiffened circular cylindrical shells under axial load. All the shells were 16 inches in diameter by 24 inches in length and were made of aluminum-alloy sheet curved to the proper radius and welded with one longitudinal weld. Systematic Wind-Tunnel Measurements on a Laminar Wing With Nose Flap

Description: "Results of measurements are given as a supplement to earlier tests for a laminar profile with nose flap; magnitude, form, and angle of attack of the flap were systematically changed. The experiments were carried out at an effective Reynolds number of 8.2 x 10(exp 5). A comparison with measurements on other profiles shows that the effect of a nose flap is essentially dependent upon magnitude of the nose radius coefficient of the profile" (p. 1).

Preliminary Wind-Tunnel Investigation of the Effect of Area Suction on the Laminar Boundary Layer Over an NACA 64A010 Airfoil

Description: Memorandum presenting a preliminary investigation made in the two-dimensional low-turbulence tunnel on an NACA 64A010 airfoil with permeable surfaces to obtain an indication of the stabilizing effect of area suction on the laminar boundary layer. Although the airfoil surface had many waves and irregularities of contour, the data corroborated qualitatively the theoretically predicted stabilizing effect of area suction on a smooth flat plate.

Theoretical Investigation of Drag Reduction in Maintaining the Laminar Boundary Layer by Suction

Description: "Maintenance of a laminar boundary layer by suction was suggested recently to decrease the friction drag of an immersed body, in particular an airfoil section. The present treatise makes a theoretical contribution to this question in which, for several cases of suction and blowing, the stability of the laminar velocity profile is investigated. Estimates of the minimum suction quantities for maintaining the laminar boundary layer and estimates of drag reduction are thereby obtained" (p. 1).

Flight Tests of the High-Speed Performance of a P-51B Airplane (AAF No. 43-12105)

Description: Report discussing testing to check the improvement of 3 or 4 miles per hour in the maximum speed of the P-51B airplane as a result of sealing the wing-gun access doors and flap-spar lightening holes. Large variations in speed were observed during testing, so additional testing and analysis was carried out to determine the effects of various factors that were suspected of contributing to the inconsistency of the plane's performance.

A Profile-Drag Investigation in Flight on an Experimental Fighter-Type Airplane the North American XP-51
