A study of the application of data on various types of flap to the design of fighter brakes

Description: Report presenting an approximate method of applying the available data on various types of flaps in the design of fighter brakes together with several examples of its use. The computed effects of flap type, size, location, and deflection as well as the effects of altitude and initial velocities on braking characteristics are also shown in some examples using the method to determine various flap arrangements.

An Investigation of Hydrofoils in the NACA Tank 1: Effect of Dihedral and Depth of Submersion

Description: Tests were conducted on hydrofoil assemblies approximating an arrangement for use under seaplanes or surface boats. A series of hydrofoils, each supported by two struts, was towed at various depths ranging from partial submersions to a depth of 5-chord lengths. At depths greater than 4 or 5 chords, the influence of the surface of the water is small; hydrofoils operating at low speed will have characteristics similar to those of airfoils of the same section.

High-Speed Wind-Tunnel Tests of Gun Openings in the Nose of the Fuselage of a 1/4-Scale Model

Description: "In connection with recent tests of a 1/4-scale model pursuit airplane in the NACA 8-foot high-speed tunnel, gun openings having low drag were developed for installation in the nose of the fuselage. The increase in the fuselage-drag coefficient for the final form of openings was 0.0132 at a Mach number of 0.69 and at an angle of attack of 0 degrees. A preliminary investigation of exhaust-gas ejectors for ground cooling

Description: Report presenting a preliminary investigation to determine the suitability of ejectors actuated by the exhaust of a radial air-cooled aircraft engine for providing engine cooling air at the ground condition. Various length and diameter ejectors were tested for varying engine power for nine ejectors actuated by the exhaust of individual cylinders and three ejectors actuated by the exhaust of groups of three cylinders.

Generalized equations for selection charts for heat exchangers in aircraft

Description: "The equations that describe the operation of a heat exchanger - the equations for pressure drop, rate of heat transfer, and power expenditure - have been put into nondimensional, generalized form. These generalized equations can be used for constructing selection charts for various types of aircraft heat exchangers. Stalling Characteristics of the Supermarine Spitfire VA Airplane

Description: Report presenting an investigation of the stalling characteristics of the Supermarine Spitfire, which was made as part of the flying-qualities measurement of the airplane. The results are presented in the form of time histories of the motions and controls during stalls in various conditions of flight. Generally, the Spitfire possessed good stall warning in the form of buffeting and stall motions were not violent.

Observations of the Improvement in Vision Brought About by the Application of a Rain-Repellent Lacquer on an Airplane Windshield

Description: "A rain-repellent lacquer was submitted to the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics by Captain K.H. Kalberer, of Lorr Laboratories, and preliminary tests and observations have been made to determine its value in improving the vision through an airplane windshield during rain. Wind-Tunnel Tests of Several Arrangements of External Auxiliary Fuel Tanks on a Fighter-Type Airplane

Description: Report presenting an investigation conducted in the 19-foot pressure tunnel to determine the aerodynamic effects of several arrangements of external auxiliary fuselage and wing tanks of large fuel capacity on a fighter-type airplane. The rectangular tank arrangement of 350-gallon fuel capacity has the greatest adverse aerodynamic effect on the airplane and is the least desirable of all the configurations tested.

Calibrations of pitot-static tubes at high speeds

Description: Report presenting the calibrations of three types of service pitot-static tubes over an approximate range of speeds of 150 to 600 miles per hour. The calibrations indicated a need for a pitot-static tube with greater accuracy, especially at higher speeds. Results regarding the service tubes, Prandtl tube, Eigh-speed tube, and a comparison of the tubes are provided.

Tests of a Highly Cambered Low-Drag-Airfoil Section with a Lift-Control Flap, Special Report

Description: Tests were made in the NACA two-dimensional low turbulence pressure tunnel of a highly cambered low-drag airfoil (NACA 65,3-618) with a plain flap designed for lift control.
