The Magnitude of Changes That Would Be Required to Balance the FY2011 Budget

The Magnitude of Changes That Would Be Required to Balance the FY2011 Budget

Date: March 12, 2010
Creator: Labonte, Marc
Description: This report lays out generic scenarios for balancing the budget in the next fiscal year. Although these are not policy options that are likely to be enacted, they are meant to offer simple examples to gauge the scope of tradeoffs that would be required if policymakers eventually decide to bring the budget back to balance. If changes are postponed or stretched over a longer time period, they would need to be larger because of higher debt service.

Date: December 7, 2010
Creator: Lawson, Marian L.; Epstein, Susan B. & Resler, Tamara J.
Description: The annual State, Foreign Operations, and Related Agencies appropriations bill has been the primary legislative vehicle through which Congress reviews the U.S. international affairs budget and influences executive branch foreign policy making in recent years, as Congress has not regularly considered these issues through a complete authorization process for State Department diplomatic activities since 2003 and for foreign aid programs since 1985.
