Taiwan: Recent Developments and U.S. Policy Choices

Date: July 1, 2006
Creator: Dumbaugh, Kerry
Description: Early in its tenure, the George W. Bush Administration seemed to abandon the long-standing U.S. policy of "strategic ambiguity" on Taiwan in favor of "strategic clarity" that placed more emphasis on Taiwan's interests and less on PRC (People's Republic of China) concerns. Among other things, President Bush publicly stated in 2001 that the United States would do "whatever it take" to help Taiwan's defense. Since then, U.S.-Taiwan relations have undergone important changes, sparked in part by the increasing complexity and unpredictability of Taiwan's democratic political environment. In response to Taiwan's political developments, the Bush Administration appears to have dialed back its earlier public enthusiasm for supporting Taiwan initiatives.

Sri Lanka: Background and U.S. Relations

Sri Lanka: Background and U.S. Relations

Date: August 1, 2006
Creator: Kronstadt, K. Alan
Description: Sri Lanka is a constitutional democracy with relatively high educational and social standards. The country's political, social, and economic development has been seriously constrained by ethnic conflict between the majority Sinhalese and minority Tamil ethnic groups. U.S. policy supports efforts to reform Sri Lanka's democratic political system in a way that provides for full political participation of all communities; it does not endorse the establishment of another independent state on the island. Since Sri Lankan independence in 1948, the U.S. has provided more than $1.7 billion in assistance funds, including some $13 million in FY2006.

Thailand: Background and U.S. Relations

Thailand: Background and U.S. Relations

Date: October 2, 2006
Creator: Chanlett-Avery, Emma
Description: U.S.-Thailand relations are of particular interest to Congress because of Thailand's status as a long-time military ally, a key country in the war against terrorism in Southeast Asia, and a significant trade and economic partner. Shared economic and security interests have long provided the basis for U.S.-Thai cooperation. With its favorable geographic and broad-based economy, Thailand is among the most likely countries to play a major leadership role in Southeast Asia and has been an aggressive advocate of increased economic integration in the region. This report outlines the various aspects of the U.S.-Thai relationship, especially in relation to other nations in Southeast Asia.
