The National Commitments Resolution of 1969: Background and Issues

Description: This report briefly discusses committee markups in the House of Representatives. The essential purpose of a committee markup is to determine whether a measure pending before a committee should be altered, or amended, in any substantive way. Agriculture and Fast Track or Trade Promotion Authority

Health Insurance: Uninsured by State, 2000

Description: An estimated 14% of the U.S. populations lacked health insurance coverage in 2000, down from 14.3% in 1999. When examined by state, estimates of the percent uninsured ranged from a low of 5.9% in Rhode Island to a high of 23.8% in New Mexico. Generally, states in the Midwest and New England have lower rates of uninsured, while states in the Southwestern portion of the nation have higher shares of their populations without coverage.

Cloture Attempts on Nominations

Description: Cloture is the only means by which the Senate can vote to limit debate on a matter, and thereby overcome a possible filibuster.
