Two newspaper directories are included in this collection: N. W. Ayer & Son's American Newspaper Annual for the years 1880-1922 and Geo. P. Rowell & Co's American Newspaper Directory for the years 1869-1877. The N. W. Ayer & Son's American Newspaper Annuals contain a “Catalogue of American Newspapers and a List of All Newspapers of the United States and Canada.” Additional information includes how to obtain an estimate (for advertisers), table of abbreviations, class publications, and a list of press and editorial associations. Census information is included, county information, and often newspaper circulation, editors and publishers. Page and/or column sizes are listed with the titles. Starting around 1912, the directories include indexes to trade, technical, class publications, and magazines, with other indexes to advertisements of engravers, lithographers, and printers, ink manufacturers, type and electrotype foundries. About that time they also began to feature maps of the states and territories. Geo. P. Rowell & Co's American Newspaper Directories contain “Accurate lists of all the newspapers and periodicals published in the United States and Territories, and the Dominion of Canada, and British Colonies of North America; together with a description of the towns and cities in which they are published.”
