The Gaylord-Hughes Scholarship
Benefit Production had been an annual
feature of the UNT Drama Department
for 17 years, but previous year's audi-
ences had never seen anything like di-
rector Ed DeLatte offered with The Boy
Friend.
"The Boy Friend was the first all-
student [Gaylord-Hughes] show with
no guest artist," Said DeLatte. It was also
the first Gaylord-Hughes musical.
The scholarship productions be-
gan in 1975 when Martha Gaylord and
Tom Hughes agreed to star in a perfor-
mance at UNT. They did a stage reading
of The Mariage Go-round with Gaylord's
daughter. The tradition grew from there.
The production was a success, and
was made an annual event. Different
shows were offered each year starring
Hughs and Gaylord.
The proceeds from the shows
payed for the Gaylord-Hughes Scholar-
ship fund, "which is listed as one of the
top scholarships at this university," said
DeLatte.
"In 1989 Tom and Martha did their
last show, On Golden Pond," said
DeLatte.Later shows featured other guest stars,
but DeLatte, who had been involved from
the beginning, wanted to see more student
participation in the shows.
DeLatte believed that the first all-stu-
dent Gaylord-Hughes production was a
success. Almost 1500 people viewed the
show during its two weekend run, which
added over $6000 to the scholarship fund,
according to DeLatte.
The Boy Friend was a nineteen twen-
ties style musical full of fun songs and tap
dances. The show starred Nikki Wensel as
Polly, the rich finishing school girl without
a boyfriend for the costume ball. She didn't
know what to do until Tony, played by
Chris Robinson, entered to deliver her cos-
tume. Polly immediately fell for the hand-
some delivery boy and the fun began.
Polly feared that boys may be attracted
to her for her inheretance, so she told Tony
that she is was secretary at the finishing
school. Tony, who's family was also
wealthy, was posing as a delivery boy for
the same purpose.
The fun really took over when both
lovebird's parents came into the picture
and each found their child being courted by
a lowly secretary/delivery boy.Each merry mix-up bred
until the frivolity reached farsic
the delight of the audience. By
the show, six couples were hap
in love and laughter to live thie:
