Yearbook Survived
History of SetbacksStory by Elyce Moroney
Yearbook: ('yl r-buk) - A school publication recording the history
and activities of a graduating class. This is the definition according to
the Webster Dictionary.
Yearbooks have been a part of NT's tradition since Volume I in
1906. This tradition has undergone many transitions, though, in the
past 84 years.
It all began in 1906 with The Cottontail. It proclaimed on the first
page that it was "published by and for the students of North Texas
State Normal School."
It was a tiny book measuring only seven inches by nine inches. It
had 114 pages filled with pictures of faculty, classes, clubs and athletic
groups. Enrollment that year was 511.

The 1917 Yucca had another section called "The growth of the
college." It stated that the Administration Building, built in 1914, had
cost $50,000 and the Central Heating Plant totalled $35,000 in 1915. In
January 1914,, the school bought 6.6 acres of land to use for athletics.
The debut of North Texas State Teacher's College was marked in
1923. President Bruce decided the name change was long overdue.
"'Normal' applied to the French cramming schools, where in about
six weeks, people were trained to teach by word of thumb. Hence-
forth our name proclaims our dignity as a professional college," the
Yucca quoted Bruce saying.

Farr estimated that 2,000 were sold in 1974 and $35,000 was bei
