SPEECH
COMMUNICATION
The Department of Speech Communication and
Drama is divided into four major areas of concen-
tration: Communication Disorders, Drama, Inter-
personal and Public Communication, and Radio-
/Television/Film. The pre-professional program in
Communication Disorders provides basic prepara-
tion in the normal development of speech, language
and hearing, and introductory courses concerned
with communication disorders and appropriate re-
medial procedures. Clinical activities are concur-
rent with academic progress and involve limited
diagnostic and therapeutic interaction with speech,
language and hearing handicapped individuals un-
der closely supervised conditions.
The concentration in radio/television/film pro-
vides a broad liberal arts education while preparing
students for careers in broadcasting, cable televi-
sion, educational media, film, or critical studies and
for graduate study in mass communication.86
